Sam Llewellyn launches this year’s Royal Literary Fund Fellowship

Sam Llewellyn - the new Royal Literary Fund Fellow.
The School’s new Royal Literary Fund Fellow is Sam Llewellyn, who takes up the role from Rachel Bentham, who completed her two-year Fellowship earlier this year.
The RLF Fellowships were established to improve the standard of English in universities. Fellows work one-to-one with students to address areas such as structure, progression of argument, style and tone as well as nuts-and-bolts subjects like grammar and punctuation.
The Fellowship has proved a great success with staff and students. It provides a confidential resource whose object is to help students get their arguments across with clarity and lucidity, and communicate complex issues without unnecessary complication.
On taking up the post, Sam said "I’m pleased to be taking over from Rachel. She made a big impression, and I shall be trying to build on what she has created. I’m very much looking forward to working with students in new and varied areas of writing.
"I strongly encourage any students who have not used the service to bring any problems they may have. Often, very small changes – polishing, really - will improve the readability of an essay and even the grade it achieves. And if more major surgery is indicated, it can be interesting and pleasurable for student and tutor alike."
Sam’s experience includes writing numerous novels for adults and children, while his seagoing crime novels are long-established favourites among the world’s seafarers. His childrens’ books, dark fantasies set among vanished landscapes, have been nominated for numerous prizes, and his columns appear in magazines all over the world.
He is a National Literacy Trust Reading Champion, and has worked as a creative writing tutor at the Arvon Foundation. As a sailor of many years he has sailed in most places from Turkey to the Baltic, in Maine, the West Indies, and the Pacific Northwest.
Sam can be found in room 0.32 on Thursdays and Fridays. Students are asked to book on the form stuck to the door, and are reminded to submit pieces of work before the tutorial - either by email or in the tray outside the door.
