Audiences have rated BBC Cymru Wales’ landmark series The Story of Wales more highly than any other BBC TV series this year.

The series, which was presented by Cardiff Honorary Professor Huw Edwards, scored the highest marks so far of 2012 for audience appreciation. In fact, taking the whole of 2011 into account, The Story of Wales’ audiences said they enjoyed it more than any series across the BBC network, excepting only Frozen Planet.

Angela Graham, who teaches documentary-making as a Professional Tutor at Cardiff, was Development Producer for the series. She explained the challenging nature of planning the complex series, "It was my job to tackle the span of Welsh history and make the initial contacts with more than forty historians as well as accessing the work of major institutions essential to this topic.

"Development proceeded over many months, trialling potential programme elements, some of which, like CGI, made it to the final commissioning decision while others, such as animation, were ruled out.

"I’m delighted that the audience’s reaction to the end result has been exceptionally positive. We expect the series to be on BBC Two network later this year.

"After this experience I am more convinced than ever that academia and the media can collaborate happily and to that end I recently delivered a workshop for Cardiff post-grads on Knowledge Transfer and TV Documentary-making and will be taking part in a number of seminars at other universities about history on television."

The school hosted Series Producer John Geraint and Director of Photography Mike Harrison in March at a Royal Television Society sponsored forum held in Bute Building.

Made by Green Bay Media for BBC Cymru Wales in conjunction with The Open University in Wales, the series followed Wales’ history from more than 30,000 years ago to the present day.
