Enrolment Week 2011
Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, BA
Welcome to Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.
Now that you have secured a place, we will have written to you with details of our degree programmes and your personal tutors will advise you further when you come to Cardiff during enrolment week.
Please note that before enrolment week you should read the essential information in the Humanities and Social Studies (HUMSS) Year One Enrolment and Subject Guide and relevant academic subject information on the Humanities Enrolment Information page.
Enrolling in the Department
When you come to enrol in the University on Tuesday 27th September you will first of all attend a Welcome Talk in Birt Acres lecture theatre, Bute Building (map ref: 45) at 9.30 am.
Here, all the worries and concerns you may have over enrolment will evaporate as we provide you with all the information you need. Next, you will meet your Personal Tutor who will be available from 10.30am. Information on who your Personal Tutor is and their room number will have been made available to you in our welcome pack when you arrive. At this meeting with your tutor, you should discuss your subject / module options. They will help you select a suitable combination of subjects / modules.
Please do not enrol on any modules until after you have seen your Personal Tutor and have been accepted onto courses by the departments you wish to study in.
To make this process work better, before you see your Personal Tutor please take a little time to look at the HUMMS Year 1 enrolment & Subject Guide for information on possible subjects, which is available online on the Humanities and Social Studies Enrolment Information page, and check the subject timetable groups to ensure that these do not clash.
On Wednesday 28th of September, actual enrolment takes place. You should go to the Humanities building to enrol for you degree subject and your additional subject(s)
School Enrolment: Humanities Building (map ref: 16), on Wednesday 28 September from 09:00 - 12:00 (Session 1 - Additional Subject Enrolment) and 13:00 - 16:00 (Session 2 - Honours Enrolment and online enrolment).

Degree Structure
Semesters, modules, credits
The BA in Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies is a three-year, full time, modular and semesterised programme. This means:
Your work is arranged in modules, or separate teaching and learning units for which you will normally receive 20 credits each, within two periods of time each year known as semesters.
Most modules comprise 12 weeks teaching, usually including a reading week. The rest of the semester is devoted to exams and other kinds of assessment, along with the lengthy processes of marking and exam boards.
Year One
Year One consists of four compulsory 20 credit modules:
Autumn Semester
1. History of Mass Communication and Culture
2. Media Scholarship (Core module for Single Hons only)
Spring Semester
1. Representations (Core module for Single Hons only)
2. Understanding Journalism
All single honours students must take modules to the value of 120 credits in Year One. This means that along with your 80 credits from JOMEC, you must choose an additional subject (such as English, History or Communication Studies) to the value of 40 credits. Please consult Humanities and Social Studies Year 1 Enrolment and Subject Guide for further information.
Joint Honours Degrees
We currently offer two joint degree programmes: with Sociology and with English Literature. If you study on one of these joint honours degrees after the first year you will divide your time equally between the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies and the other school.
Important Information for First Year Joint Honours Students.
In the case of Joint Honours students with English Literature, you must enrol on a third subject (40 credits) in addition to the two Honours subjects for which you have already been accepted. You must only enrol in Journalism and English Literature for 40 credits each.
For Joint Honours students with Sociology you are required to enrol for 60 credits in each subject. You do not therefore have to enrol for an additional subject.
REMEMBER!
All of us at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies realise what a daunting and confusing experience your first few weeks at University can be – so don’t be alarmed! Consult us when you are unsure and never be afraid to ask questions. We look forward to meeting you all.
Best wishes,
Dr John Jewell,
Director of Undergraduate Studies
