Press coverage of terrorist activities in Saudi Arabia (1995-2004)

The research will attempt to study the performance of the Saudi Arabian press in their coverage of terrorist activities within the country. The study will compare of five newspapers coverage of terrorist events during the last ten years and explore to what extent they differ and offer the terrorists the oxygen of publicity.

Purpose of the Study (objectives)

The study intends to accomplish the following points:

  • Identify the difficulties experienced by the Saudi press.
  • Discover what obstacles prevent the Saudi press from practicing their role, as reflected in their coverage.
  • Understand the causes or effects of the characteristics of each stage of Saudi press from 1995-2004.
  • Refine our understanding of the stereotypes of the Saudi press.
  • Provide an understanding of each stage of development within Saudi press especially from 1995-2004.
  • Provide understanding of what makes the Saudi press coverage of terrorist events successful at different stages and vice versa.

Research question

In order to achieve the research aims, this study seeks to address the following questions:

  1. What was Saudi press position on terrorist activities?
  2. How was the press coverage of terrorism in different time zone?
  3. To what extent did the severity of the different terrorist events influence press coverage within different time frame

Arguments (hypothesis)

  1. Terrorist activities in Saudi Arabia has shaped press coverage in recent time (1995-2004).
  2. The terrorists targets have affected the coverage of terrorism in Saudi Arabia by the Saudi press.
  3. The Saudi press has strengthened the relationship with its readers over the past decade.
  4. The Saudi press have undergone several stages of changes over the past decade. In the first stage their coverage of terrorism in 1995 was weak comparing to the terrorist attacks in 2004.
  5. The Saudi press have responded to technological advances in other media –and the public’s access to it- by becoming more comprehensive in the coverage of terrorism.
