Our strategic partnership with Xiamen University supports joint academic programmes, a PhD scholarship scheme and student and staff exchanges.

Cardiff was the first city in the UK to twin with a city in China when it partnered with Xiamen over thirty years ago.

Our partnership agreement with Xiamen University, signed on 18 November 2016, extends our long-standing relationship and existing collaborations on fields of mutual interest, including catalysis research.

We share Cardiff’s international ambition and look forward to collaborating on new and innovative projects that can deliver benefits for both China and Wales.

Initiatives of the new agreement include the development of collaborative training of researchers through co-supervision of doctoral students, as well as a joint fund to provide £1.2m of seed corn funding for collaborative research projects to attract external funding and create new trade links for Wales.

Previous benefits of our relationship with Xiamen include the creation of a Confucius Institute at Cardiff in 2008. The Institute delivers an extensive programme of Chinese language education, promotes Chinese culture in Wales and supports collaboration between Wales and China. Additionally, Cardiff Business School and Xiamen University School of Management and Economics have an existing formal agreement on joint PhD student supervision and have co-organised two joint symposia held in Xiamen in 2015 and Cardiff in 2016.

Outward Mobility Fund

As part of our strategic partnership with Xiamen University / Xiamen University Malaysia (XMU / XMUM), a joint outward mobility fund has been established.

The fund intends to foster ties between the parties and to stimulate staff and student exchange leading to the development of new areas of joint research, innovation and educational initiatives.

The fund will now cover costs for outgoing visits to either Xiamen University, China or Xiamen University, Malaysia.
