Extended opening hours in University Libraries

In response to the unprecedented demand for library, IT and quiet study spaces during the run up to exams in 2010, the University Library Service will be piloting extended opening hours in selected libraries during semester 2.
This is the second year that Information Services has piloted extended opening hours in the University libraries, and the project has been externally funded through resources aimed at supporting part-time students.
The pilot will extend the opening hours in the Arts and Social Studies, Law, Trevithick, Aberconway and Bute Libraries. In addition, the Dental Library will continue with its well-established pattern of extended opening hours around exam periods, and 24-hour opening is planned for the new Health Library on the Heath campus, when this opens in 2011/12.
Trevithick Library will be open until midnight Monday - Thursday. Arts and Social Studies and Law Libraries will also be open until midnight Monday - Thursday, but for reference-only access between 9.30pm and midnight.
On Sundays, all five libraries will now be open for longer:
- ASSL / Law 12pm - 9.30pm
- Aberconway 10am - 9.30pm
- Trevithick 12pm - 9.30pm
- Bute 12pm - 9.30pm
Tracey Stanley, Deputy University Librarian, explained: "The opening hours of Cardiff's libraries is one of the major issues that comes up regularly in the National Student Satisfaction survey, and in INSRV's own student surveys. We also receive lots of comments about our opening hours through Board of Studies and comments boxes in the libraries, and so we have identified this as a major priority area for improvement."
"By extending the opening hours later at night and on Sundays, we are continuing to develop and provide more flexible working spaces for the students and researchers who depend on the library service," added Tracey. "Trevithick and Arts and Social Studies libraries will also be further extending their opening hours over the exam period, with Trevithick open until 2am Monday – Thursday, and ASSL and Law open from 10am on Sundays during this time."
