Handbook for Information Literacy Teaching continues to travel

Universities across Spain are using a handbook designed in Cardiff University to support information literacy teachers in acquiring the necessary skills for delivering engaging and effective sessions.

The Handbook for Information Literacy Teaching (HILT), which was written by a group of Subject Librarians at Cardiff University, covers all major aspects of information literacy teaching from planning to assessment, and also provides a wealth of versatile teaching materials.

The Handbook was originally created in 2005 in order to support staff in Information Services who were developing their own information literacy teaching skills. Since then it has been updated several times, and used and adapted by a number of universities and institutions around the globe.

The Handbook has now been translated into Spanish - a two year project which was prompted by a presentation on "Pedagogical experiences: equipping and enabling staff for information literacy teaching", given by Cathie Jackson, Senior Consultant for Information Literacy, in Madrid in 2009.

The translation was undertaken at Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, and was funded by two national library organisations in Spain. The translated Handbook is now available for use by all Spanish universities, and can be adapted to suit their own individual requirements.

Nigel Morgan, Subject Librarian and Chair of the HILT Group, said: "I am delighted that the Handbook is being used for Spanish and Catalan teaching resources. Information literacy skills are vital to today's students, operating as they do in such an information-rich environment. Following the tips and techniques in the Handbook has definitely helped information literacy teachers to embed this knowledge into Cardiff's curriculum, and it is always gratifying to hear that other institutions across the world find it equally useful."

This is not the first time that the Handbook has been translated into another language. A Finnish version is also available, which includes teaching materials contributed by librarians from across Finland.
