Library fines: what you need to know

Fines are charged for the late return of items to Cardiff University libraries. The fines vary depending on the loan period of the item. There are a number of things you can do to avoid receiving library fines.
Top tips
Make sure you check your library account regularly and renew or return your books on or before their due date.
You should not allow anyone else to borrow items on your library account. If you do allow friends to borrow items on your account, you will be liable for any overdue charges if they are returned late and replacement costs if they are lost or stolen.
If you can't renew your books, please contact the library as soon as possible.
How to renew your books
You can renew your books online via Cardiff Portal or LibrarySearch, in person at the library, by telephone or via the Ask a Librarian Live chat service. You can also renew your books via the Cardiff University mobile app. See more information on the Library blog.
Don't forget that books may be returned to any Cardiff University library. However, four hour loans and reserved items should be returned to the library they were borrowed from.
Paying fines
Fines can be paid by cash or cheque at all library sites, and by debit/credit card over the phone or at the following libraries: Aberconway, Arts and Social Studies, Biomedical Sciences, Bute, Health, Senghennydd, Science and Trevithick.
If fines exceed £10, you will be unable to borrow any further items until the outstanding amount is paid. All fines must be cleared at the beginning of each recess and at the end of each academic session.
Some libraries may allow you to pay your fines in instalments - please check with your library to see if this is possible.
| Loan Period | Fine |
|---|---|
| 13 weeks | 25p per day |
| 4 weeks | 25p per day |
| 2 weeks | 25p per day |
| 1 week | 50p per day |
| 3 days | £1 per day |
| 1 day | £1 per day |
| Overnight | £1 per hour |
| 4 hour loan | £1 per hour |
Lost or stolen books
If any library items are lost or stolen from you, please contact the issuing library immediately. You will be liable for the replacement cost of any items which are lost or stolen from your possession while issued to you. Fines may also be charged for overdue items which are subsequently reported as lost or stolen. Please check with your library for further details.
If you would like to discuss any personal circumstances relating to your library fines please get in touch with your library.
