Welsh newspapers collection (19th-20th C.)

The collection comprises original and microfilm copies of newspapers from around Wales, dating from the 19th century onwards. A very broad range of Welsh newspapers is included in the collection, offering good chronological and geographic coverage, e.g. The Merthyr Express (Nov 1864-Dec 1929); The Rhyl Guardian (Jun 1878-Dec 1918); The Pembrokeshire Herald (Jan 1844-Dec 1924); The Brecon Journal (June 1857 –May 1868); The Barmouth Advertiser (Jan 1920-Dec 1950) and others ranging from The Aberystwyth Times to Yr Ymofynnydd.

Date range: 18th-20th centuries.

Significance: Of significance in the United Kingdom.

Size: c. 140 Welsh titles, 80 British/Irish titles, 40 continental titles, 20 overseas titles.

Notes: Other newspaper collections include a wide-ranging section of British newspapers (including, for instance, The Illustrated London News, the Graphic, and Picture Post); a diverse section of European newspapers, mainly from France, Spain, Germany, and Italy; and an international section with a focus on newspapers for American Welsh, such as Ninnau and Y Drych.
