The name ‘University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire’ was legally changed to ‘University College Cardiff’ in 1972, in order to formally recognise the existence of another University College in South Wales - Swansea, which was founded in 1920. However, the name ‘University College Cardiff’ had appeared on published material since the early 1960s. Official records relating to Cardiff University and its predecessors are held in Institutional Archives and are the responsibility of the University Records Manager
