Political pamphlet collections (20th C.)

Various small collections of political pamphlets from donors over the decades, covering a range of topics.

  • D. E. Evans pamphlet collection (first Tutor in Charge of the University’s Extra Mural Studies centre, from 1949-51, and Workers' Educational Association teacher) - a collection of around 400 pamphlets on social and political issues. Authors include J. M. Keynes, Beatrice Webb, George Lansbury and Ramsay MacDonald; organisations represented include the Independent Labour Party, the League of Nations, the Trades Union Congress, and the Union of Democratic Control. A handlist is available in the Salisbury archive (301/9/22) A small collection of his personal papers is also held, on historical, social and economic matters, in the Library Archives.
  • Pamphlets collected by Rhys David, a Financial Times journalist covering Ulster during the 1970s. Examples of titles include – Where Sinn Fein Stands, Uslter: a Protestant’s Proposal for Peace,  Let’s Back the Peace Workers, The RUC or not the RUC. The material ranges in size from single page documents to more substantial pieces of 30 pages or more. Producers of the pamphlets include the Ulster Unionist Party, the Northern Ireland Office, the Ulster Workers’ Council, and Sinn Fein.
  • The personal library of political pamphlets of Ifor B. Powell, previous professor in London and Cardiff, covering his interests in the League of Nations, south east Asia, and other topics; mainly for the inter war years, plus some mid 20th century material. A printed handlist of the collection is held in the Library.
  • A pamphlet collection from the personal library of the late Cardiff City Councillor John Reynolds. A Labour Party politician, Reynolds collected a wide-range of pamphlets on a variety of topics related to left wing politics and social issues. The Collection includes sections on the Welsh Labour Party, the co-operative movement, trade unions, socialism, and communism. Amongst the collection are several examples of American left wing journals and newspaper series.
