Local Acts collection (18th-20th C.)

A significant collection of local Acts relating specifically to areas in Wales and Welsh topics. Coverage ranges from early 18th century road, canal, and transport legislation, to late 19th century coverage of railway, utilities, and public health developments. An original set of Acts relating to North Wales came with the Salisbury Library, and another set of 18th and 19th centuries Acts relating to South Wales was donated by a Cardiff solicitor’s firm in the late 20th century.

Date range: 1730s-early 1900s.

Significance: Significant in Wales.

Size: C. 500 legal acts.

Notes: More modern local acts for the 20th century will be held in the University’s Law Library, amongst the general UK legislation series for Local and Personal Acts. 700 acts from 1900-1999 can be searched in the Welsh Local Acts database by title word, subject keyword, place keyword, and date. Listings of earlier Welsh related local and Personal Acts can be found in T. I. J. Jones, Acts of Parliament Concerning Wales 1714-1901, University of Wales Press, 1959. The University Library also holds a substantial collection of local and structure plans for Wales, England and Scotland, from the 1970s onwards.
