Inventory of the Historical Monuments (England) (all periods)

This series lists sites in England regarded as being worthy of preservation by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England. Each volume begins with an introductory essay on the topography and growth of the city or region, followed by brief discussions of individual monuments or sites. The bulk of each volume is devoted to an illustrated inventory (mostly black and white photographs) in which the monuments are concisely described under a number of headings, e.g. pre-Roman earthworks, Roman remains, ecclesiastical buildings, secular buildings, etc. The Library holds 43 volumes covering: the cities of Oxford, Cambridge, London, Salisbury and York; the counties of Dorset, Gloucester, Herefordshire, Huntingdonshire and Northamptonshire; and 3 volumes devoted specifically to chapels and meeting houses in England by region. The volumes were published between 1910-1994.
