Access to other libraries
SCONUL Access is a reciprocal access scheme and grants borrowing privileges under different bands:
|Band||Category of user|
|A||Academic or support staff, postgraduate research students|
|B||Part-time, distance learning and placement students|
|C||Full-time taught postgraduates|
|R (Reference)||Full-time undergraduates|
How to join the SCONUL Access scheme
To qualify for SCONUL Access you must be registered as a library user in good standing (i.e. having no debts at your home library and not having seriously infringed the Information Services regulations).
To apply, complete the online application form on the SCONUL Access website. You will be notified by email when your application has been processed. If your application is approved, print off the email introduction and take this, along with your Cardiff University ID card, to your chosen library.
Please check the opening hours of the library you intend to visit beforehand and check if you need to take anything else (e.g. passport photo). Contact details for participating institutions as well as further information is provided on the SCONUL Access website.
Cardiff Metropolitan University
Cardiff University undergraduates can join Cardiff Metropolitan University library service under this reciprocal scheme.
To apply for this scheme, visit your home library at Cardiff University. Only students with a clear library record (no fines) will be considered. Once approved, you will be given a letter of introduction from the University Library Service of Cardiff University. Take this letter, along with your Cardiff University ID card, to any Cardiff Metropolitan University library where staff will process your application. Once you join, you'll be able to borrow 5 books.
Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama
Cardiff University undergraduates from the School of Music can join the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) under this reciprocal scheme. Undergraduates from any other Schools in Cardiff University should contact their home library if they have a valid reason for needing to use the facilities at RWCMD.
All visitors must report to the Reception Desk in the Foyer and obtain a library visitor's pass before proceeding to the RWCMD library. To join:
Music undergraduates - visit the RWCMD library with your Cardiff University ID card and staff will process your application.
Undergraduates from any other School - visit the RWCMD library with a letter of introduction from your home library and your Cardiff University ID card. Once you join, you'll be able to borrow 2 items (excluding all short loan items).
Using wireless at other institutions
None of the reciprocal schemes listed give access to computers. However, you may be able to use the eduroam wireless network at other institutions if you have your own mobile device/laptop. See the 'Cardiff University staff and students visiting other institutions' section on our eduroam Service web page for more information.
