Services for Distance Learners
These services are available to you if you are a distance learning student and are registered on an institutionally defined distance learning course. Please contact your library to register as a distance learner.

Services for distance learning students will be obtained at the individual libraries. Please contact your library to register.
For 1 and 2 week loans the initial loan period will be doubled with further renewals of 1 or 2 weeks provided an item is not in heavy demand.
Postal loans will be provided to students at the discretion of the Library Manager. The issuing Library will pay outgoing postage and the student will pay return postage. There may be limits to postal loans on high demand items.
Postal loans are obtained by contacting the library responsible for your course subject - see this list of libraries listed by subject to locate your library.
Photocopies / Scanned Articles
The charge for a postal photocopying service or the email transmission of scanned articles / book chapters is 10p per side, to take into account the photocopying / scanning, staff time and postal costs as applicable. Scanning and emailing will be used where possible.
Current procedures will apply with arrangements for postal loans and photocopies as detailed above.
Cardiff Portal provides a single point of access to the online resources available to you off-campus.
Electronic information resources
Many of the electronic journals, e-books and databases subscribed to by Cardiff University are available off-campus and should be accessed via the Library page within Cardiff Portal.
All students are assigned a Cardiff University email account which you can access via the Cardiff University mobile app or Cardiff Portal. Information Services will use this email to contact you so you should check it on a regular basis. Find out more about accessing your email.
All students will be allocated a fixed amount of file space as decided by their School. You can access your space on your H drive within My Files in the Files section of the Portal.
All students have access to Learning Central via the study section of Cardiff Portal or by visiting Learning Central directly. The content available within Learning Central is the responsibility of your course leaders.
Cardiff University Mobile
The Cardiff University mobile app provides access to key services such as: email, calendar, library account and electronic resources. A separate app is available for Learning Central access. Full details of the apps can be found on the Cardiff University website.
Access to Cardiff University licensed software

Some Cardiff University licensed software is available to purchase from Information Services Reception, 40-41 Park Place - see the Information Services Schedule of Charges (PDF document) for details.
Payments may be made by card and software can be posted.
The statistical package SPSS is available for staff and students to download free of charge.
Endnote can be purchased at a discounted price from http://edustore.adeptscience.co.uk/. You need to log in with your Cardiff University username and password to access the site. Endnote Web is available as an alternative, and it is free to use for Cardiff University students. Distance Learning students can register for an Endnote Web account by registering for an account with Web of Knowledge.

The IT Service Desk is the first point of contact for the support of IT services.
The IT Service Desk handles all queries, including fault reports, assistance with services, or suggestions for change and enhancements to IT services.

Access to local university libraries and IT services
The SCONUL Access scheme allows Distance Learning students to borrow books from other university libraries.

The Eduroam Service
The Eduroam Service allows users visiting participating institutions to access network resources using the login credentials from their own institution.
The level of network access a visitor has is set by the host university and may vary from one university to the next. More information about the Eduroam service can be found on the Information Services network and wireless web pages.

Cardiff University Library YouTube Channel
The cardiffunilib YouTube channel contains a set of short information literacy videos, for example "How to access electronic journals".
