Installing Windows XP
The installation of Windows XP must be carried out by an authorised Workstation Installer. Please contact your Local Computing representative (LCR) for assistance. Installation typically takes around 2 hours. Please do not leave your workstation unattended for long periods in case the installation fails leaving your workstation logged in to your account.
If you have used another version of Windows XP with your login account, please clean your Windows XP profile before taking the new Windows XP installation in order to maintain compatability between your profile and the installation.

Windows XP file quota
Information Services recommends that users of the Windows XP service have their file quota increased to at least 30 MB. Your School Computing Representative will be able to assist you with this.
Minimum workstation specification
The minimum workstation specification for the Windows XP service is:
- 866MHz, Pentium III Processor
- 256MB RAM (512MB or more recommended)
- 4GB Hard Disk (20GB or more recommended)
The current XP image may work adequately on PCs with slower processors and less RAM but this use is not supported by Information Services.
A 4GB hard disk is the absolute minimum capacity that the XP image needs to work. A 4GB hard disk will only provide a local C: drive and larger capacity disks are required to support a read/write local D: drive.
Installing to an existing Windows 98/NT PC
Installing Windows XP onto a Windows workstation for the first time will destroy all the information on the local hard disk (C: and D: drives). Please be aware that it is your responsibility to ensure that any files that you have stored on the hard disk and that you wish to keep are backed up. Your school IT support staff will be able to assist you with this.
Also, if you have installed any local software or drivers for special hardware to your workstation, these will be removed when you install Windows XP. Please consult your IT support staff about re-installing these.
Installing Windows XP onto a new PC
You must fill in a Permission to Connect form before you can connect a new PC to the network.
Once the application has been processed, which usually takes about a day, you will be able to login to XP.
