Local Computing Representatives in Schools - Role and Responsibilities

Each School has nominated a Local Computing Representative (LCR) to act as a formal link between the School and the Information Services Directorate (INSRV) on ICT matters.

There are three principal elements to the role of LCR:

1. Strategy

INSRV is totally predicated on delivering to the University what it needs in its pursuit of excellence in research and learning and teaching.  As such, it is essential INSRV is aware of the strategic needs of every School so that its ICT programmes can be aligned accordingly.  

The principal function of the LCR of a School, therefore, is to ensure s/he is keyed in to the strategic needs of the School (and its associated research groups and centres) and to fully represent those needs to INSRV at discussion meetings, forums, workshops etc.  

2. Communication

The communication function of the LCR role is manifold:

i. To collect user requirements from the School community on a wide variety of issues and to ensure that those requirements are represented to INSRV.  In a large School, effective user requirements gathering might require the formation of an internal IT communications network.

ii. To disseminate information from INSRV regarding ICT service issues and developments in a timely manner.

iii. To keep INSRV and other Schools abreast of major ICT developments and innovations within the School.

iv. Through attendance at the quarterly LCR Forum and other events/workshops, actively participate in the sharing of good ICT practise amongst all Schools.

3. Technical

The third key responsibility of the LCR is to keep abreast of, and provide technical input as required into, the ICT developments being undertaken by INSRV, to ensure that the School receives maximum and timely benefit from such developments.  

In addition to the above, the LCR might, but not essentially, also have responsibility for ensuring that key ICT tasks within the School are carried out either by him/her self or by the School’s ICT support staff.  Such tasks include network account creation, password changing, quota management, access rights management (e.g. to shared drives), installation of departmental applications, workstation administration/installation (e.g. imaging of machines), printer installation and print queue administration.
