Private Calls

The Central Telephone System is provided to facilitate University activity.

The University recognises as legitimate expenditure occasional, unavoidable, private local calls by members of staff to their doctors, dentists or homes when they are kept at work.

Reasonable use of the service for other private calls is allowed, provided that the caller ensures that the cost of any call is repaid to the University when, in due course, the bill is received.

It should be noted that the rate charged for private calls includes an element for use of the telephone system in addition to the cost of the call.

Private outgoing facsimiles and telephone calls must be dialled by prefixing the number required with the code #00#9

A record of the call will be made. If the fax machine or telephone is used by more than one person, it is advisable to keep a record of private calls made.

Members of staff who make calls as consultants or in some other capacity on behalf of outside bodies are reminded that repayment of the cost is required. Advice about keeping records of such calls is available from the Executive Officer (Telecommunications).
