Photography Unit - Heath Park Campus
Head of Photography:
The following photographic services are available:
- Clinical Photography
- General photography including:
- Research Photography
- Scanning
- Medico-legal and Forensic Photography
Clinical Photography
Clinical photography is undertaken on all sites within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Photographs are produced for inclusion in a patient's medical case-notes as an aid to diagnosis and treatment. They are also useful in the teaching of medicine within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board Medical Centres and also the School of Medicine and School of Dentistry, Cardiff University. For more information, see: Clinical Photography.
General Photography
For all non-clinical photography it is necessary to make an appointment with our Photography Co-ordinator on Tel: 029 2074 4601.
Public Relations (PR) Photography
The Department undertakes PR photography for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Cardiff University publications, newsletters and exhibitions, etc. across all of the Cardiff and Vale area. Appointments need to be made as far in advance as possible with our Photography Co-ordinator on Tel: 029 2074 4601. Details of the brief will be taken at the time the appointment is booked, so please have your requirements and all the appropriate details available when you call.
We will need to know what the job entails, what you are hoping to show, the location for photography, and how the pictures are to be used, are they for publication or to go on a poster? We would also like to know about any potential problems there might be, e.g. parking restrictions or access difficulties, etc. Most assignments can be completed within one week of taking the photographs.
Portraiture
Portraits for staff notice boards and publications can be taken either in one of our studios or on location. Appointments are necessary. Please note we do not undertake routine passport photography.
Research Photography
Where photography, either clinical or non-clinical, is required for research, it is advisable to have discussions with the Head of Photography well in advance, so that a detailed photography protocol can be formulated and tested.
Equipment and Techniques for Research and Publication
Small items of equipment can be photographed in our Department studios. We do not have the facilities to handle a fresh gross specimen. These would normally be photographed in the operating theatre as clinical photography. Larger pieces of equipment can be photographed on location by appointment with our Photography Co-ordinator on Tel: 029 2074 4601.
Scanning
Digital images for lectures or prints for publication can be produced from scanning a variety of originals including: slides, artwork, prints, books, journals, x-rays, scans, ECG and EEG traces, etc. Please note that file size is directly dependent on the dimensions and resolution of the scan, which will be tailored to suit your output or display device.
For further information and advice see our Scanning web page.
Customers should be aware that any work brought to the Department for reprography or scanning is subject to the current laws of copyright. For more information, see: Copyright.
Turn around time
Standard turn around time for scanning is 5 working days. Scanning jobs of over 20 originals should be discussed with a photographer to agree a deadline.
Medico-legal Photography
Medico-legal photography is carried out on the instruction of solicitors acting on behalf of clients seeking compensation for criminal injuries, accidents and malpractice. We will not undertake work without a written request from a solicitor.
Forensic Photography
Certain types of forensic photography are available through the Dental Illustration Unit and the Wales Institute of Forensic Medicine. Orders for this type of job usually come from forensic investigators.
