Away from Cardiff? Services for travelling researchers

If you are travelling away from the University to attend a conference or undertake research here are some of the key services and resources that may help you while you are away:


The intranet is the single point of access to online resources and services for staff and students.

Electronic information resources
Many of the electronic journals, e-books and databases subscribed to by Cardiff University are available off-campus and should be accessed via the 'Libraries' section of the intranet.

You can access your University email account via the intranet homepage.

File store and sharing
Networked file store (H: and S: drives) can be accessed via the My Files application in the intranet.

You can access the tools which enable collaborative working via the 'Collaboration' tab in the intranet applications (please note these are accessible to members of staff only).

Manage your Library account

You can manage your Library account via the Library Catalogue. Use the 'Sign in' in the top corner to see when materials are due to be returned, renew your books and check on the progress on any reservation or Inter-Library Loan requests.

Access to local university libraries and IT services

SCONUL Access 

The SCONUL Access scheme allows staff and students to borrow books from other university libraries.

Full details of how to join SCONUL Access, including participating libraries, can be found on the SCONUL website.

The Eduroam and Wifi Service

The Eduroam and Wifi Service allows users visiting participating institutions to access network resources, including wi-fi, using their login credentials from Cardiff University.

The level of network access a visitor has is set by the host institution and may vary from one institution to the next. More information can be found on our Eduroam and Wifi Service page.

Requesting photocopies or scans of journal articles and book chapters

Journal articles and book chapters held in our University Libraries in a printed format can be sent to staff and researchers who are off-campus. Library staff can photocopy and post or scan and email the item to you. A small charge may be made to take into account any costs involved in completing a request and requests cannot exceed what is allowed by copyright law. Contact your Library to make a request.

Staying up-to-date with news in your field(s) of interest

Your Subject Librarian can help you set up newspaper and subject database alerts delivered via email to help you stay informed of new developments in your field(s) of interest while away from the University.

Our Ask a Librarian live chat service is available 9am - 5pm, Mondays - Fridays. Where we can offer chat beyond these hours, we will. Our status will indicate whether there is someone available to answer your query. You can find alternative ways of contacting us on the Contact Us page.

Staying in touch and working with your colleagues in Cardiff

University researchers can use the Lync service, including instant messaging and presence awareness, as part of Office 365 suite using a web browser.

Software for Skype can be installed on the office PCs of staff allowing them to make voice or video calls to colleagues who are away from Cardiff.

Two Videoconferencing Studios are available on campus to allow staff to hold presentations and discussions with colleagues with access to similar facilities who are working away from Cardiff.

Teleconferencing is available on campus to allow staff members who discussions with colleagues who are working away from Cardiff.

Quickr TeamPlace and the Connections Communities can help you to conduct collaborative work with colleagues in Cardiff whilst being away from the University. Wikis, blogs and chat boards provide opportunities for discussion, shared task lists and calendars aid organisation, while bookmarks and file storage provide an opportunity to share information.

IT Service Desk

The IT Service Desk is the first point of contact for queries regarding IT services and can be contacted by telephone (+44 (0)29 208 74487) or via email. Staff can resolve many queries immediately, but if this is not possible, your query will be passed to a specialist for further investigation and resolution.

Designing and printing conference posters

The University's Media Resources Centre is available to help you design and print your own poster to present at a conference.

The Media Resources Centre can print your own poster design onto a large single piece of semi-gloss paper using a high resolution ink-jet printer.

If you have never designed a conference poster before, you can take advantage of the Poster Design Service where a Media Resources Centre team member will help you design your poster.

Printing and photocopying services up to size A0

Cathays Park Graphic Services units offer low cost printing and photocopying services up to size A0. Services include: printing and photocopying in colour or black and white, scanning, laminating and soft binding.

Printing business cards, postcards, booklets and leaflets

The Media Resources Printing Unit can arrange the printing of business cards as well as booklets, leaflets and postcards giving an overview of your research to hand out to others (a minimum order number may be required). You can email the staff to discuss your needs further.

ORCA Institutional Repository

Online Research@Cardiff (ORCA) is the University's online repository for research papers published by its staff. You can use ORCA to self-archive your own research publications and make them easily available to anyone you meet at a conference or other event away from the University.
