Introduction to EndNote

EndNote is a database for storing and retrieving bibliographic references. It is used to search and retrieve references from online bibliographic databases, organise references and images, and create bibliographies instantly in a Word document.

Other advantages include:

1.  Save Time

No longer will you need laboriously to type each reference into your bibliography. EndNote will output and format your references for you at the click of a button.

2.  Large Capacity

Don't worry about running out of space in your bibliography. EndNote can store up to 100, 000 references in a single library.

3.  Search Databases

Search bibliographic databases via EndNote, including PubMed, Zetoc and Web of Science. Ask your librarian for other database connections.

4.  Collect References Automatically

Automatically add sets of references from bibliographic databases into your own library. No laborious typing required!

5.  Select a Style

You can output your references in over 1400 bibliographic styles. These include styles for specific journals and a dedicated Cardiff University Harvard style.

6.  Link References

You can link your references to pdf files on the web or to a file saved on disk. It is also possible to store full text pdf articles directly in your EndNote library.

7.  Search References

You can search through your references to find sets within your EndNote library. EndNote also allows you to sort your references by a wide range of criteria.

EndNote is available on the Cardiff University Network. It is also available to purchase for off-site use at Information Services, 40-41 Park Place or at the Duthie Library on the Heath Campus.

Before you begin, you may like to refresh your knowledge of citing references.  If you wish, you can consult one of the Citing References tutorials before you begin.
