Use the databases below to:

- keep up to date with the latest publications in your subject
Some databases require your Cardiff University network username and password for off-campus access. These databases are available for all staff and students of Cardiff University but because of licensing restrictions they are not available to external members and visitors.

BIOSIS Previews
This is the world's most comprehensive reference database for life science research. It covers original research reports and reviews in traditional biological and biomedical areas. It also covers references to primary journal literature on vital biological research, medical research findings and discoveries of new organisms.
To access BIOSIS Previews off-campus your Cardiff University network username and password will be required.

BMJ Learning
BMJ Learning is a web site for medical professionals. It offers a wide range of learning resources, commissioned by the BMJ Publishing Group. The learning resources deal with everyday issues in primary care and hospital medicine, they are evidence based and kept up to date. They currently have over 270 learning modules.
Your Cardiff University network username and password will be required to access this resource.
The first time you access this resource you will need to register.
On the right hand side of the screen click on "Register here for free modules" and complete the registration including choosing your own password. At the last screen of your registration click on go to BMJ Learning.
Alternatively, if you have previously registered, then login to BMJ Learning on the right hand side of the home page.
Once you have logged in, your name should appear on the right hand side of the screen and click on "Shibboleth access".
Ensure on the next screen that the Federation selected is the "UK Access Management Federation...." then click on continue.
Select "Cardiff University" from the drop down list and click Select.
If you logged in via the portal you shouldn't be asked for a username and password. But if you go to BMJ Learning via another route you will at this point be asked for your Cardiff username and password.
You should now be able to access all the content on BMJ Learning.
British National Formulary
BNF twice-yearly source of up-to-date guidance on prescribing, dispensing and administering medicines.
BNF for Children
The essential resource for clinical use of medicines in children. BNFC presents essential practical information to help healthcare professionals prescribe, monitor, supply, and administer medicines for childhood disorders.
When you click on the BNFC button to access the text of the current BNFC a login box is displayed. If you have not registered before you will need to select the registration option.
In order to request registration you will need to supply a valid email address. Instructions for the registration process will be sent to that email address. You will then be able to complete registration by supplying your name, a few details about the type of organisation you work in, and a password of your choosing.
British Pharmacopoeia
An authoritative collection of standards and medicines in the UK. Includes monographs for the British, European and veterinary pharmacopoeias.
Requires a password for use off-campus.
Chemical Abstracts
Complete set of Chemical Abstracts is available, in printed form from 1907 to 1995 - ask in the Science Library for further information.
You can also access the information via SciFinder Scholar, please ask in your library for further details.
The Cochrane Library
Contains regularly updated reviews on the effects of health care interventions on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of health problems.
EMBASE
The Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE), is a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database indexing over 3,500 international journals in the following fields: drug research, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, toxicology, clinical and experimental human medicine, health policy and management, public health, occupational health, environmental health, drug dependence and abuse, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and biomedical engineering/instrumentation.
Coverage is from 1947 onwards. Access is via Ovid.

PubChem
PubChem provides information on the biological activities of small molecules. It is a component of NIH's Molecular Libraries Roadmap Initiative. Search for chemical structures using names, synonyms, keywords or by drawing a chemical structure as the query. Search for deposited chemical substance records and bioassay records.
PubMed - Medline
A service from the National Library of Medicine. Provides access to over 11 million citations from medical and life science journals through MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE and other related databases.
Scopus
Includes over 14,000 scholarly journals in scientific, medical, technical, and social science disciplines. Coverage goes back selectively to 1966.

Web of Knowledge Service
This service provides access to the Web of Science databases:
- Arts & Humanities Citation Index
- Social Science Citation Index
- Science Citation Index
Covers over 8,500 scholarly research journals, including author abstracts, from 1981 to the present. Searchable by keyword or by works that have been cited by other publications.
Also includes the ISI Journal Citation Reports for the Sciences and Social Sciences. To access the Reports, login to Web of Knowledge and select the ISI Journal Citation Reports option from the home page. These provide easy access to data so scholarly journals can be compared. Categories include highest impact and most frequently cited journals.
