British Crime Survey 2007-2008: Unrestricted Access Teaching Dataset
The British Crime Survey 2007-2008: Unrestricted Access Teaching Dataset is based on the British Crime Survey, 2007-2008 and constitutes real data which are used by the Home Office and are behind many media headlines. The teaching dataset is a subset which has been subjected to certain simplifications and additions for the purpose of learning and teaching.
The data covers topics such as:
- fear of crime
- opinions about crime and anti-social behaviour in the area
- experience of crime
- socio-demographics
- accommodation and area characteristics
A one stop gateway to the ESRC datasets from the 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001 UK census. To access many of the datasets, registration is required. You may also need to login using your Cardiff University username and password. 2001 aggregate census is also available from InFuse. 2011 census data will be available on the Office of National Statistics web site as it is released. It will be available from InFuse from March 2013.
CIPFA Statistics
Police Actuals and Police Estimates available via the eLibrary. To access the statistics you will need to register with CIPFA using your @cardiff.ac.uk email address.
- Police Actuals:
A detailed analysis of actual revenue expenditure and income, plus a wide range of other financial data including: information on the cost of overtime; special constables; police pensions; authority costs; capital programmes and levels of reserves and balances. Non-financial information includes: details of police officer numbers by grade; other staff levels; the number of road accidents involving personal injury and the number of notifiable offences. - Police Estimates:
A detailed analysis of estimated revenue expenditure and income, plus a wide range of other financial data including: information on police pensions; police authority costs; capital programmes and levels of reserves and balances. Non-financial information includes: details of police officer numbers by grade; other staff levels and the number of pensioners.
Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS)
The ESDS provides access to a wide range of qualitative and quantitative economic and social data. Much of this data is available for free download.

Eurostat
Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union situated in Luxembourg. Its task is to provide the European Union with statistics at European level that enable comparisons between countries and regions. This includes statistics on crime and criminal justice.
US Bureau of Justice Statistics
Collections and analysis of information about offenders, victims of crime and financial and institutional structures. There is a summary of findings for each topic, details of publications and an outline of data collection methods.

Regional Trends (Standalone CD-ROM)
Provides a complete archive of the first 30 years of statistics to 1995. Topics include population, crime and justice and living standards. The CD-ROM, as well as more recent updates, are available in the Arts and Social Studies Library.
