How to: log in and log out of the network

To log in to the network via a computer on campus, enter your username and password and click on OK.

To protect your files and to prevent unauthorised access to the network via your account, it is vital that you log out when you have finished your work.

To log out of the network correctly, click on Start in the bottom left corner of the screen, click Shut Down, select Log off <your username> and click on OK.

When you're logged on to a computer, stay at that PC. Never leave a logged-on PC unattended.

How to: access your personal network space and manage your account

Once you have been allocated your username and password you will be able to access your personal network space - this is the H:\ drive. This is accessible from anywhere, since it is not stored on the computer you are using.

To see how much of your H:\ Drive you have used, click on Start, Networked Applications, General Software, Utilities, Network File Quota and click on Yes to install the application. Pass your mouse pointer over the icon at the bottom right of the screen.  If you find you are running out of storage space, delete files you no longer need. If, after having done this, you still need more space, then please contact your Local Computing Representative.

Remember: do not delete the following essential files/folders as your account will not operate without them:

  • PMAIL
  • JCCS
  • GroupWise
  • WINDOWS NT 5.1 WORKSTATION PROFILE

Your network account has a profile that holds your personal settings, for example, your desktop shortcuts. It is stored on your H:\ drive. It is important that you do not switch off your computer until you see the message that it is safe to do so. If your profile becomes corrupt you may experience problems logging in or accessing networked applications.

If you experience problems with your account, your user profile may be damaged and will need to be 'cleaned'. This process means you may lose some desktop shortcuts and certain personal settings for Word and other applications.

For assistance in cleaning your profile please refer to an IT Support Assistant (in many of the libraries), contact your Local Computing Representative or telephone insrvConnect (the Information Services IT Service Desk) on 029 2087 4487.

When you've finished, log off the computer properly so it's ready for another user.
