Copyright, data protection and freedom of information

Copyright applies to all materials or works that are covered by the relevant UK legislation (the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act, 1988) and any re-enactment of this legislation. Copyright material includes text, lists, databases, drawings, graphic designs, logos, sound recordings, films, broadcasts, computer programs (software), electronic material stored on local and remote drives and on Internet sites.
It is important to recognise that infringement of copyright by staff or students may expose the University and the individual to legal action. Any infringement of copyright is considered by the University to be a serious offence and may result in disciplinary action.
No member of staff or student may reproduce copyright works other than to the extent permitted by law or by appropriate licences or permissions from the copyright owner.
It is the responsibility of the individual reproducing the copyright work (or using any copyright material including computer software) to ensure that the appropriate permission from the copyright owner has been gained.
