IT support in the Julian Hodge Study Centre

7 January 2011

The Julian Hodge Study Centre provides students with 24/7 access to IT facilities and small group study meeting rooms.

The Centre, on the 2nd floor of the Julian Hodge Building, is open 24/7 providing nearly 150 open access PCs as well as a number of laptop connection points. Wireless access is available throughout the Julian Hodge Building so students can take advantage of the seating on the ground floor as well when using their own laptops. Demand for the Centre's PC workstations and printers is particularly high during the exam periods and over coursework deadlines, especially because of the 24/7 opening, but there is a constant demand for the facilities provided at all times, including the vacation periods.

During term time, IT support is provided between 9am and 9pm Monday to Friday as well as between 10am and 5pm on Saturdays. We have identified particularly busy periods during terms and additional support is also available on Sundays during these times.

Members of the INSRV Service Desk are on hand to offer advice and assistance for all IT-related queries, from setting up network access for mobile devices to software and hardware enquiries. The team also provides a comb-binding and laminating service, invigilation for ECDL examinations, and co-ordinating access to the meeting and training rooms on the 3rd floor of the building.

To expand the facilities available to students taking advantage of the 24/7 Study Centre, and working outside core hours, Information Services has worked in partnership with Campus Services to introduce 24-hour beverage vending machines in the Building. As drinks are not allowed in the Study Centre, students can now purchase refreshments from the machines located in the JHB Lounge on the ground floor of the Building, and take a break from their study at the same time.

The Julian Hodge Study Centre also offers:

  • 150 Windows XP workstations with access to networked applications
  • networked black and white and full colour A4 and A3 printing
  • printer payment machine
  • black and white networked photocopier
  • 2 x scanners
  • a variety of assistive software and hardware
  • 2 designated computers with Welsh version of Windows XP
