Sub identities
For the purposes of these guidelines, a 'sub-identity' is one which represents a part of the University, whereas an 'external award logo' is one which the University has earned the right to display by achieving certain criteria.
Stationery
One approved sub identity logo and a maximum of two additional external award logos are permitted for use on University letterhead and compliments slips in specific positions according to an approved template. Applying sub identities is possible on business cards but there are clear size and legibility limitations and cost implications. More information is available here and advice can be obtained from the Public Relations Office.
Web pages
One sub identity and unlimited relevant external logos are permitted for use on School and Department web pages. External logos should reflect awards relative to the School or Department or represent partnerships and sources of funding. Placement of commercial logos, third party logos and accommodation of multiple visual identities on the same website can cause usability or design issues, and in some cases, approval is required due to the commercial restrictions of the University's web service. If in doubt please contact the University's Web Management Team at web@cardiff.ac.uk
Sub identity logos
In support of managing a single effective visual identity of Cardiff University, the University maintains a strong general presumption against the development and use of sub-identities and associated logos within its own professional services and academic schools and colleges.
Whilst flexibility exists to incorporate a sub-identity within the University identity system, for example the application of a University-wide celebratory/corporate logo, in all instances applications for sub-identity development must be submitted by the Head of School/Administrative Division to the Public Relations Office for consideration.
The Public Relations Office should be contacted and the proposal discussed prior to the commissioning of any design work. In most cases, it is possible to achieve communication aims another way without the need for a new sub-identity. The Public Relations Office is happy to provide advice.
