Within this system a sub-identity is defined as a symbol, the graphic form of the name of a recognised part or activity of the University, or a combination of the two.

Approval of additional logos

It should be noted that, in support of managing a single effective visual identity of Cardiff University, the University maintains a strong general presumption against the use of sub-identities within the administration and academic schools. Whilst there exists the flexibility to incorporate a sub-identity within the University identity system, for example the application of the 125 anniversary logo, in all instances sub-identities must be supplied by the Head of School/Administrative Division and submitted to the Student Recruitment and Web Division for consideration at a senior level. To avoid waste, it is recommended that the Division is contacted and the proposal discussed prior to the commissioning of any design work. In considering any application for the adoption of a sub-identity the University will consider:

The appropriate positioning of sub-identity logos will be considered in conjunction with the application according to established options.

Application of additional approved logos

Application of the logos of stakeholder organisations, indicating partnership or support for example, is possible within the visual identity system. The appropriate position of such logos will depend upon considerations such as: the extent to which the external logo is a quality/achievement indicator (eg Investors in People; prize awards etc) the nature of the University/School’s association with the organisation; the level of any support/sponsorship being provided. In most instances it is envisaged that such logos will be positioned in the sub-identity position but there is also provision where appropriate for the logo to be positioned at equal status with the Cardiff University logo/and written reference to the partner organisation.

In instances of multi-partnership projects it is usual for letterhead to be created with the joint agreements of partners and to either feature the various partners logos in a consistent manner or not to feature any of these in favour a separate and distinct project logo.
