Weighting


WEIGHTING OF HUMSS DEGREE PROGRAMMES as at autumn semester 2010

Note: For all Joint Honours programmes, the weighting of each half will be according to the policy of that subject.

ENCAP
English Literature
 (incl. Cultural Criticism)   50:50 weighting between year 2 and final year.

Language & Communication 50:50 weighting between year 2 and final year.

Philosophy 40:60 weighting between year 2 and final year.


EUROS
European Union Studies
There is a declared weighting of half the degree based on language marks, half on area studies for 2 language students; the weighting for a single language student is 25:75. Calculation of language marks follows the principles declared in the Languages entry [below].

Languages (under review – any amendments will be posted asap)
1. The standard weightings of modules for single Honours:
Final year Language (30 credits):  20%
Intercalary year (120 credits):   5%
Year 2 Options (90 credits):    37.5%
Final year Options (90 credits):    37.5%
2. The standard weightings of modules for joint honours, accounting for 50% of the total degree:
Final year Language (30 credits):         20%
Intercalary year (60 or 120 credits): 5%
Year 2 Option (30 credits):             12.5%
Final year Option (30 credits):             12.5%
3. Year 2 language (30 credits) does not count to the final assessment.
4. Whether year 2 and final year options continue to be equally credited and equally weighted is currently a matter for discussion in the course of Periodic Review.

Politics 50:50 weighting between year 2 and final year.

SHARE
Ancient History, Archaeology & History
  30:70 weighting between year 2 and final year [all year two modules are level 3 modules] except for History & Welsh History where there is a 40:60 weighting between year 2 and final year.

Religious Studies 50:50 weighting between year 2 and final year. Equal weighting given to years 2 and final year as the same modules are run for both years.

JOMEC   40:60 between year 2 and final year

MUSIC 30:70 weighting between year 2 and final year but also see below.
This [30:70 weighting] applies to the music component for all our programmes (BMus, BA (single & joint), BA with Maths and BSc with Physics). In addition to this overall weighting we also weight each module according to credits awarded (e.g. a 10 credit module result is multiplied by 10, a 20 credit module by 20 & a 30 credit by 30) the total for the year is then divided by 120 BEFORE the 30/70 year factor.

Economics
Standard CARBS weighting of 40:60 between year 2 and final year.

Japanese
• For students who commenced year one in 2005 and 2006:
 
In assessing a candidate’s final degree classification, the following weights shall apply to the modules in the Module Timetable:
The Japanese modules at level two, level S and level three shall be accorded the following weightings:
Level two (yr 2)
Japanese Language 2A (level two) : 4%
Japanese Language 2B (level two) : 4%
Modern Japanese Society (level two) : 5%

(The three business studies modules at level two shall be accorded 6.666% each.  The weight of the level two EUROS modules should be confirmed with the relevant European language department)

Level S (yr 3)
Intercalary Study Programme in Japan (Level S) : 7%

Level three (yr 4)
Each level three double module shall be accorded a weight of 10%.

(The weight of the fourth year EUROS modules should be confirmed with the relevant European language department).  

• For students who commenced year one in 2007 or later:  
In assessing a candidate’s final degree classification, the following weights shall apply to the modules in the Module Timetable :
The Japanese modules at level two, level S and level three shall be accorded the following weightings:
Level two (yr 2)
Japanese Language 2A (level two) : 5%
Japanese Language 2B (level two) : 5%
Modern Japanese Society (level two) : 5%

MATHS For BA Joint Honours Maths, 30:70 weighting between year 2 and the final year.

SOCSI For BA and BScEcon Joint Honours Sociology and for BA Joint Honours Education, 50:50 weighting between year 2 and final year.
