CUDAH and SCASS
The Board belongs to two subject defence/co-ordination bodies. The Council of University Deans of Arts and Humanities (CUDAH) and The Standing Conference of Arts and Social Sciences (SCASS). We were founder members of both. SCASS began in 1984, CUDAH in 1994.
SCASS has a web page www.scass.org.uk, runs an annual public conference, and concentrates on lobbying at Westminster, Edinburgh and Cardiff responding to consultation papers (e.g. from the QAA), and co-ordinating the subject defence groups (e.g. HUDG).
Wales SCASS Cymru convenor, Ian Fisher at Newport, exists to deal with Welsh matters.
CUDAH is Humanities only, meets twice a year in London to share experiences and get briefed on developments (such as AHRB, Institute for Learning and Teaching), CUDAH has a mailbase, at firstname.lastname@example.org
The papers for both are kept in the HUMSS Office and can be consulted via Lesley Edwards.
Given current government policies, the need for these is not as acute as it was in the 1980s. However, we need to stay active, and be wary, in case organisations need to be hyperactive in our defence again.
