This workshop series which aims to support the University’s communication strategy. Effective communication not only engenders a sense of community, it creates a culture of trust and supports our vision to be one of the world’s leading universities.
Staff may attend all, or individual, modules.
Building a Marketing Strategy
In an increasingly competitive market it is essential to understand the benefits of an effective marketing strategy. This course will provide a framework for building and developing a marketing strategy within an academic context, in line with the University’s strategic aims and taking into consideration current higher education factors. The session will provide guidance on implementing your strategy as well as how to evaluate its success.

Developing an Internal Communications Strategy
Effective internal communications is critical to enabling us to do our jobs effectively and to having a shared understanding of the University’s objectives.
This course will provide a framework for an internal communication strategy, as well as providing practical tips and tools necessary for success. You’ll learn more about work already underway across the University in this area and how you can apply this to your own School or Division.

Managing Media Relations
Media coverage can help communicate the impact of your research & reach a wide audience. If a journal article, for example, has media coverage a citation add-on effect often results.
Whether it's pure news reporting or comment and analysis, the media remains as important as ever. Knowing how the media gathers and chooses the stories it runs and how it sieves and analyses the information it collects is vital to good media relations. This course offers practical advice on how to effectively work with the media to promote stories and deal with media enquiries including:
- Presentation skills;
- How to deal with difficult questions;
- How to get your message across effectively;
- Working with the University’s Public Relations Team.

Maximising Social and Digital Media
Social and digital media is now an essential part of all marketing and communications. This one day course will introduce you to the basics of social networking as well as understanding how to access and utilise the tools, concepts and key information to allow you to build relationships and reach your audiences through online communities. You will learn more about the potential of video and podcasting including what makes an effective film and the practicalities and limitations of using multimedia on your website.

Communicating with an International Audience
This course will provide an overview of the steps and measures you can take to understand, communicate and engage with your international audience. This course will introduce you to tools available to increase the effectiveness of your international communications and how to work with academic staff to ensure the most is being made of existing international links.
