Teaching, Learning & Assessment

Achieving Associate/Fellow HEA recognition for your teaching practice

2 hours

Do you teach, support learning, or otherwise contribute to the student learning experience? You can apply to the Higher Education Academy (HEA) for recognition of your teaching professionalism against the ‘UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education’ (UKPSF). This introductory two-hour session is aimed at colleagues who have not yet gained recognition for their teaching and will focus on the Associate and Fellow HEA Descriptors. We shall look at the elements of the Standards Framework and discuss the process involved in the application and recognition process. By the end of the session participants should be able to decide which Descriptor is appropriate to their practice and be confident to start writing an application for recognition. Participants will be offered optional application-writing support through a follow-up, free workshop.

Applying to the HEA for recognition against the UKPSF? The HEA requires that you provide an institutional endorsement. This institutional endorsement should come from a professional who has senior responsibility for professional development learning and teaching within the institution. You will need to enter the name, title and institutional email address of the signatory when completing your application. In Cardiff's case this is:

Professor Patricia Price

Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience and Academic Standards

When submitting your application please email Professor Price (copying in her PA Lisa Pearson, so that she will be expecting your endorsement request. Cardiff University will be automatically prompted when you submit your application with a request to confirm that we endorse it. The endorsement is only to confirm that your application is known to the University. It is not an indication of any judgement about your application and there is no necessity for the signatory to comment on it. For more information about the HEA recognition process please visit: or attend one of our introductory workshops.

To book a place on either date please submit your booking request via Core Portal*
*Please note you will need to inform your line manager of your training request so that they can authorise it in the Core Portal. No automated email will be sent notifying them of pending training requests.
