Led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan, the Cardiff Futures programme is an opportunity for academic staff to develop their career paths and to discover and explore how they might contribute to shaping the future of our University. Through a series of 7 one and two-day workshops over 9 months, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the governance of the University, to explore opportunities to shape the University's strategic direction and to build a sense of community with colleagues from other Schools and Departments.

 

Participants will have a unique chance to achieve a real result in a collaborative project with other participants for which they will be given a small amount of funding.

What is the Cardiff Futures programme? 

Led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan, the Cardiff Futures programme is an opportunity for academic staff to develop their career paths and to discover and explore how they might contribute to shaping the future of our University. Through a series of 7 one and two-day workshops over 9 months, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the governance of the University, to explore opportunities to shape the University's strategic direction and to build a sense of community with colleagues from other Schools and Departments.

In addition to sessions themed around core aspects of the University, which include the opportunity to meet and discuss issues that affect you with the senior people who make key decisions, participants will be able to explore approaches to leadership and teamwork, and to understand key trends shaping the changing landscape of higher education. Participants will also be able to explore in dialogue with senior leaders from our University and from other institutions how the University's strategic plans can respond to the range of constraints, imperatives and opportunities these changes present.

The programme is intended to create space for the cultivation of a collaborative approach across the institution as well as to support academic staff in the development of their own professional aspirations. Each participant will be allocated a mentor and will work on a collaborative project with other participants.

Programme Aims 

All the workshops will have certain aims in common, in particular:

  • To enable participants to learn more about key issues within the University;
  • To provide the opportunity to spend time with senior figures in the University;
  • To hear from senior leaders from other organisations;
  • To reflect on key themes including leadership, collaboration and building networks;
  • To get participants together for further work on their chosen projects.

Beyond that, programme sessions will have the following objectives:

  • Session 1 – Leadership and Teamwork (residential – 2 days)
  • Session 2 – How the University Works
  • Session 3 – Financial Management and Funding
  • Session 4 – Building an Academic Career and Developing Research Strategies (residential – 2  days)
  • Session 5 – Handling the Media (non-residential – 2 days)
  • Session 6 – Teaching and Learning in the University
  • Session 7 – Final Reflection – Summation – Presentations

Is the Cardiff Futures programme for me? 

The programme has been developed with early career academics and those relatively new to the University (but with at least two year's experience in post) in mind. However, participants with more experience could also benefit and the programme focus will suit all those who are willing and interested to work outside their usual subject or discipline. We will also make up to four places available to managerial, professional and specialist staff for their development. The programme does need your commitment to attend all the sessions and will work best if you approach it with an open mind. Those who prefer to work collaboratively with others will find the programme format rewarding. People interested in working to improve the way in which the University operates are particularly encouraged to apply.

How will I benefit from Cardiff Futures? 

You will learn a number of skills and approaches that will help in developing your career; develop your understanding of key University issues including the broader context within which the University operates. You will be able to raise and discuss issues of interest or concern, get to know senior figures in the University in both formal and informal sessions, build networks with colleagues and learn from a mentor (an experienced and successful senior academic). You will also have a unique chance to achieve a real result in a collaborative project with other participants.

Projects 

As part of the programme you will be given a small amount of funding to pursue a project in collaboration with other participants. Whilst project proposals will not be finalised until the first sessions of the programme, you are encouraged to start thinking about possible areas to explore, which can be worked on collaboratively, and have benefits to the University. The kinds of projects we envisage will involve collaborative working between participants, to address issues of relevance to the University, using the insights and skills particular to the members of the project teams and their disciplines. There will be time available during the sessions for groups to meet and discuss project progress, although it is anticipated that you will spend additional time on your project outside the sessions.

Participants are encouraged to be as creative as possible when choosing their projects. Past projects have included: the simplification and coordination of systems supporting interdisciplinary research and teaching; the role of Cardiff University in the economic and social regeneration of Wales; the management of the University’s relationships with its external stakeholders to identify innovation and engagement opportunities; establishment of an ‘Editorless’ research journal.

Programme Schedule and Workshops 

The programme begins with a two-day residential session in November and continues with monthly sessions until the end of June. In order to benefit from the opportunity it is important that you can attend all of the programmed sessions, pursue your project and have regular meetings with your mentor. Dates for the mentoring sessions are flexible and will be arranged to suit your diary. Project progress groups will meet at mutually convenient times.

Venues

Programme sessions will be held at a variety of external venues in and around Cardiff and South Wales. This is designed both to facilitate the nature of the sessions and provide ideas for locations which might be of interest to you in your work.

Programme Features 

  • Ongoing mentoring support throughout the programme from more experienced academic colleagues, to assist with career reflection and personal progress;
  • Parallel working groups established to take forward projects, issues and initiatives of their choice;
  • Participation in Action Learning Sets to assist in learning and improve practice;
  • Dedicated programme facilitator, Andrew Scott, available to assist project progress;
  • Dedicated programme co-ordinator, Martin Udwin, to whom concerns and questions can be directed;
  • Internal and external experts, guest speakers and facilitators.

Cost 

All appropriate costs associated with the programme will be met by the University. Transport will be provided, or reasonable individual travel costs to programme venues will be reimbursed.

Application Process 

Formal applications for a place should be outlined briefly on a short application form. You will need the support of your Head of School/ Chief Operating Officer, which must be included in the application. Places are limited to 24. The application process is intended to ensure that a well balanced group with common themes is established. Applications which are unsuccessful this year may be considered next year. The deadline for applications for the 2013/14 programme is Friday 17 May 2013. Candidates will be notified by Monday 17 June 2013 if they have been successful in securing a place on this year's programme.
