Your regular probation or appraisal meetings with your Principal Investigator offer a structured environment in which to review progress and skills used on your current project and anticipate potential new projects and opportunities for you and the research team. You should obtain feedback on your performance and can request opportunities to develop your technical and transferable skills, including opportunities to attend conferences, to engage in teaching, or to apply for grant funding. You may also be able to gain advice on future moves within the Institution or elsewhere.

There is a comprehensive range of workshops and events offered through the Research Staff Career Development Skills Programme. This includes:
- CVs and Job applications
- Job Interviews
- Employment Rights
- A variety of Career Planning events on academic and other options
There are online modules in ‘Career Planning in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences` and ‘Career Planning in the Sciences`, both of which could provide an excellent kick-start to a review of your career. These are ideal for use in conjunction with the interactive workshops and career consultations.
Included in the 2012/13 programme will be events focusing on Academic Careers and Exploring Wider Career Options. Both of these series of events involve speakers who have successful careers in their chosen academic or wider careers.
Careers and Employability hosts ‘Employer Events’ designed to open up to participants a comprehensive range of new career opportunities. Fairs and occupational talks are targeted at the graduate and postgraduate audience but can provide valuable information on a growing range of opportunities you may not have yet considered.
