Postgraduate Research Day: Call for Papers

The School of History and Archaeology at Cardiff University announces its inaugural Postgraduate Research Day to be held on the 19th of May, 2010 in Cardiff, and invites submission of abstracts.

The purpose of the Postgraduate Research Day is to allow postgraduates in the School to present their research in a receptive and low-pressure environment, get feedback on their work, and develop their ideas.  The research day will allow postgraduates to interact with fellow postgraduates and staff in their own section, as well as the School’s other sections.

We welcome proposals for 20-minute papers making developed arguments.  It is our hope that postgraduates at all stages of their degrees will attend.

Abstracts for papers should be no longer than 300 words and should outline the paper’s argument.  Applicants should also include details of their current degree, supervisor, and research topic.  Papers from postgraduate researchers in any section of the School are welcome.  All proposals should be sent to: HISAR.PGRday.2010@gmail.com.  The deadline for abstracts is 19 March, 2010.

Postgraduate Archaeology Field Trip

Congratulations to James Rodliff (MA Archaeology) and Morwenna Perrott (MSc Care of Collections) for their successful organisation and leading of a four day archaeology field trip to Cornwall between Monday 6th April and Thursday 9th April 2009.

A group of 21 Archaeologists, Conservationists and Care of Collections students, including 2nd years, 3rd years and postgraduates took part in the trip, which was partly funded by a generous grant of £1000 from the Cyril Fox Fund.  The trip included visits to a variety of archaeological sites all over Cornwall and Dartmoor

The organisers would like to thank The Cyril Fox Fund for making the trip possible, Charlie Johns (Cornwall HES) for meeting them at several sites, and to all those in the School whose enthusiasm and advice helped make it so successful.

Please visit the Cornwall Archaeology Student Field Trip 2009 page for further details and images.

Forgotten Welsh Houses

Mark Baker (PhD Archaeology) and his co-author, Michael Tree, have recently published their book Forgotten Welsh Houses. The book is a compendium of 150 heritage properties in Wales that are mostly empty and at risk and provides advice on acquiring and rescuing such buildings. This is the first book to review the breadth of buildings at risk in Wales and includes the fascinating stories of properties that have already been rescued in Wales. The book also includes a foreword by HRH the Prince of Wales.
The book was sponsored by the Georgian Group, Victorian Society and SAVE Britain’s Heritage. It received a prestigious launch at the National Assembly on the 5th May 2009, hosted by Mark Isherwood AM.

Mark is currently researching his PhD on The Impact and Development of the Welsh Country House under the supervision of Professor Denys Pringle and Professor Judi Loach.

A Request

As part of our attempt to use this website to encourage interaction between postgraduates we have received a short request from Adam Anders (PhD Ancient History)

Aside from engaging in research for my PhD, I am currently preparing a paper on a secondary (but somewhat related) topic, namely ‘The Transmission of Commands in Roman Battle’.  I have completed a substantial amount of research and have recorded my findings, but I have by no means exhausted the subject. If anyone wanted to discuss the topic or any aspect of it with me, for any reason, I'd be more than happy to do that. Interested colleagues should email me to get in touch.
Thanks,
Adam
