Complex Societies in Barbarian Europe - 10 credits (HS2365)

This module examines selected themes in the development of complex societies in Europe north of the Classical world. Important themes are the development of urban society, the significance of trade in establishing and defining a markedly hierarchical society, the problem of the origins of the Indo-European languages, and the definition of the Celts and Celtic art. The module also examines the complex relationship these societies had with the Mediterranean world beginning with the establishment of the early Phoenician and Greek trading colonies and ending with the Roman Empire at its maximum extent.
