HCT150 - Understanding Cancer: Patient and Professional Perspectives
This module has been designed for any healthcare practitioner who may be working with patients who are living with or beyond cancer.
The focus of the programme is the delivery of cancer care education that is developed and delivered in partnership with People Affected By Cancer (PABC), aiming to ensure that the care you provide in your practice is person centred and focused on PABC’s needs. Studying this module will develop your understanding of how to shape care and cancer service delivery within your own specific professional field and/or clinical environment.
Our approach is one of collaborative teaching, and so we work closely with patient partners to provide opportunities for reflective learning and transformative thinking. Your learning and development on this module will translate into improved clinical practice that benefits your patients and their families.
It makes the information more real and human, and less theoretical. It's easier to relate to and helps one to blend empathy with professionalism.
The module brings together healthcare practitioners from a variety of settings to share experiences. You will critically examine a range of professional, policy and advanced practice issues that shape your contribution to quality cancer care.
The module is designed to promote maximum integration of the practice and theoretical components of cancer care. For this to happen there is an expectation that you bring your existing experience to the study sessions and to participate actively in discussion and debate. Such relationships, founded on mutual respect, will help students realise their potential.
To learn and move forward we have to see it through the patient's eyes. The opportunity to ask questions is extremely valuable.
You will study via a blend of in-person and self-directed study. The way you will be taught is based on principles of adult learning; we will provide support and guidance to encourage self-direction and intellectual independence in order to facilitate your professional and personal development.
Learning and teaching methods will include lectures, guided reading activities, seminar discussions, group work, case studies, online activities hosted and discussion forums. Online learning will be structured around existing on-line resources eg patient blogs.
The module runs from January to May each year, and can be taken individually (stand-alone) or as part of all School of Healthcare Sciences MSc pathways. You do not need to be working directly in a cancer service to access this module, wherever you work you support PABC and this module will support your knowledge, skills and service delivery.
