Postgrad Welcome Events

24 September - 7 October 2012

The Graduate Centre is the home for postgraduate students at Cardiff University. As well as the events below, we also organise trips and social events throughout the year. Our licensed bar is open Monday to Saturday 17.00 until 23.00 for informal socialising.

Events are free to enter unless otherwise stated. Tickets may be purchased at the Graduate Centre Reception Desk.

Monday 24 September        

University Welcome to Postgraduates

You are invited to attend the official welcome address led by the new Vice Chancellor Professor Colin Riordan. Additional speakers include the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Director of Registry, Governance & Students, President of the Students’ Union and Head of the Graduate Centre.

Monday 24 September 

Postgrad Meet & Mingle

Don’t miss the first night of our welcome programme! There will be lots going on to help break the ice and help you meet and get to know your fellow postgraduate students.

Tuesday 25 September        

Cardiff Coffee Crawl

Just arrived in Cardiff and need to find the best social hotspots for your caffeine fix? Join us for a tour of the local coffee houses and cafes where a variety of espresso based drinks and cakes will be available at each of the 4 venues we visit.

Start Time: 15.00 until approx 17.00

Wednesday 26 September  

Sports Fayre

The Athletic Union's 59 sport clubs will be represented at the Sports Fayre, so if you want to get involved, turn up and check out what's on offer. Visit the Freshers' website for more details about the Sports and Societies Fayres: www.cardiff-freshers.com

Wednesday 26 September 

Quiz & Pizza Night

A fun general knowledge team quiz with pizza included (choice of pepperoni or cheese & tomato). There will be questions on pop culture, history, geography, etc with enough international flavour to suit everyone. Come along with or without a team - individuals are welcome and we'll find you some fellow postgrads to join in with! This event will run every Wednesday throughout the Autumn Term.

Thursday 27 September  

Societies Fayre Day 1

The Students' Union Societies cover a broad range of interest areas. They're also a great way to meet new people. Visit the fayre and join whichever society takes your fancy.

Thursday 27 September       

Food & Vintage Market

Meet at the Graduate Centre for a special food & vintage street market. In association with the award winning RCMA Market, over 20 producers will be showcasing various clothes, bric-a-brac, books, and delicious locally sourced food! With so much to choose from this is a must come event!

Societies Fayre Day 2

Another opportunity to explore what's on offer from all the many societies.

Friday 28 September

Pub Crawl & Club Night

Starting in our very own Cafe Bar - the best place to start your weekend at #FollowFriday. Showcasing a variety of live music acts as you enjoy chatting to your new found friends be sure to start the night right! Afterwards current students will lead you around favoured venues of Cardiff postgrads, ending in one of Cardiff's most exciting nightclub's, Buffalo.

Saturday 29 September 

Film Night: The Muppets

When 3 Muppet fans learn that Tex Richman wants to drill under the Muppet Theatre for oil, Gary, Mary and Walter set out to find the Muppets who have been split up for years so that they can put on one last show and save the Muppet Theatre. A mixture of new releases, international, and classic films will be shown for free every Saturday through the year.

Sunday 30 September    

Games Night

Classic games from KerPlunk to Risk will be available to play throughout the night. Prizes will be given to game night winners. So come along and try a different way to spend your Sunday night.

Postgrad Meet & Mingle Replay

Wednesday 3 October

Why Not…Wednesday! Dr Who Experience

Every week we’ll be making the most of study-free Wednesday afternoons and giving postgrads the chance to try new things. This week, Why Not…visit The Dr. Who Experience! Step through a crack in time and help the Doctor fly the TARDIS and come face-to-face with some of the scariest monsters seen on screen. Packed with amazing special effects this multi-sensory experience is not one to miss!

Start Time: 13.00 – 16.00

Wednesday 3 October

Thursday 4 October

Cardiff Bay Tour & Boat Ride

You will be guided through Bute Park, stopping off along the way to learn about Cardiff Castle and its parks. You’ll then board the Aquabus – Cardiff’s very own water taxi – to the bay, stopping off to explore the Cardiff Bay Barrage. From there, you’ll head over to the famous Wales Millennium Centre’s Ffresh Lounge for some traditional Welsh refreshments, followed by an hour-long guided tour of the Welsh National Assembly – our most important civic building which is also of great architectural significance.

Afterwards, you may continue to explore Cardiff Bay at your leisure and will be instructed on where to catch the bus / train to return to the university, or you can accompany the guides back to the city by train. Please note that return travel is not included in the price.

#FollowFriday

There’s no better way to celebrate the end of the week with live music and drinks offers at the bar. The start of your regular end-of-week celebration!

Film Night: The Avengers (Assembled)

Nick Fury is director of S.H.I.E.L.D, an international peace keeping agency. The agency is a who's who of Marvel Super Heroes, with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When global security is threatened by Loki and his cohorts, Nick Fury and his team will need all their powers to save the world from disaster.

Sunday 7 October    

The Sunday Chill: Open-Mic Night

This is your opportunity to showcase your talents. Whether you fancy yourself as the next singer-songwriter to rock the charts, you want to share your poetry with the world, or some other hidden talent would entertain your fellow students. We would love for you to be a part of what is always a great opportunity to simply come and be entertained or support your friends. If you want to be a part of the nights line-up email the grad centre and let us know!
