Environmental Information

Requests for Environmental Information

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 individuals have the right to request information held by the University. However, separate legislation - the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 - governs requests for environmental information. A full definition of what constitutes environmental information can be found by clicking here .

It includes:

  • the state of any water or air, the state of any flora or fauna, the state of any soil, or the state of any natural site or other land;
  • waste, emissions and discharges into the environment;
  • any activities or administrative or other measures (including any environmental management programmes) which are designed to protect these;
  • the state of human health and safety, including the contamination of the food chain.

Requests for environmental information need not be in writing however, enquirers are strongly encouraged to submit any requests in writing in order to assist us in providing you with an efficient response. The Freedom of Information Officer will be happy to assist with/respond to requests for environmental information.

Charges for Environmental Information

Under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 the University may apply reasonable charges in respect of both staff time for locating and retrieving information requested and the costs of reproducing and transporting the information to the requester (disbursement). Costs for disbursements will be charged where they are £10 or more. Where a fee is to be charged the University will issue a fees notice to the enquirer, setting out the estimated costs involved. The work would only proceed when the fee had been collected. If the fee was not collected within 60 working days the request will be deemed to be withdrawn.
