Improving communications for staff
Improving communications for staff

In recent years, numerous sources of feedback have emphasised the need to improve communication at the University and the University’s first Staff Attitude Survey (conducted in June-July 2008) placed this as the most important priority for staff. Three communications working groups, each led by a Pro Vice-Chancellor, were formed to focus on improving communication with students, staff and external audiences respectively.
The Staff Communication Group, led by Professor Terry Threadgold, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Staff and Diversity, aimed to:
- Create a sense of community among university staff
- Identify ways in which staff communication could be improved
In order for the Communication Strategy for Staff to effectively address the concerns that staff had in relation to communication, a series of focus groups took place across the University between December 2009 and April 2010. All members of staff were invited to participate, and more than 250 members of staff took part in the focus groups, which resulted in comprehensive data detailing opinions and perceptions about communication for staff at Cardiff University. This enabled the Communication Strategy Staff Group to identify the aspects of communication that staff currently enjoy, and those that staff felt could be improved. The Focus Groups also resulted in a huge number of suggestions and ideas for improving communication for staff at Cardiff University, many of which are planned to be implemented in the coming months. The Staff Communication Strategy Group would once again like to reiterate its thanks to all those members of staff who participated in the focus groups.
The report from the Staff Communication Focus Group and the associated action plan will be published on this website shortly, however, if you should have any queries in relation to this piece of work please contact the University’s Public Relations Office: publicrelations@cardiff.ac.uk
