Direct Entry Health Courses

The Programme is offered in full-time and part-time modes leading to the achievement of the BSc (Hons) award. Students enter the programme with advanced standing; full-time students normally complete the Programme in 15 months over 2 academic years. The modular structure of the Programme allows students to complete the compulsory modules whilst also selecting the most appropriate optional perioperative modules from a suite of modules within the Programme provision. These optional modules, amounting to 40 credits, together with the compulsory Research Skills, Professional Practice Development and Dissertation modules, make up the required 120 Level 3 credits.

The current BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice was introduced in 2003 in response to a growing need for the provision of post-registration opportunities for professionals working in the perioperative environment.

As a consequence many perioperative professionals seek to study at Bachelor’s level and beyond; a situation that has influenced the early re-development of the existing BSc (Hons) provision. It is anticipated that the Operating Department Practitioner profession will move to becoming an all-graduate profession in terms of the basic registerable qualification. When this situation occurs (a scoping exercise commenced in May 2007), the qualification leading to the protected title of ‘Operating Department Practitioner’ would probably be BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice. The change in the programme title, therefore, not only reflects changes to current practice but also potential future policy.

Assistant Radiographic Practice (Certificate)

The Assistant Practitioner programme is a one-year full time day release course designed for NHS support personnel who wish to develop their skills and role as a member of the radiography team. It comprises 25% academic-based and 75% work-based learning and leads to the award of Certificate of Higher Education in Assistant Radiographic Practice. Assistant practitioners perform protocol-limited tasks under the direction and supervision of a radiographer. The programme prepares Assistant Practitioners for one of the following areas of radiographic practice:

Diagnostic Radiography

Assistant Practitioners in diagnostic radiography perform non-complex diagnostic radiographic procedures on ambulant adult patients. Their work is mainly based in General X-ray rooms where they perform many of the basic radiographic examinations. They may work in other radiographic imaging areas in accordance with the NHS Trust’s agreed protocols.

Radiotherapy & Oncology

Assistant Practitioners in radiotherapy and oncology assist radiographers in treatment rooms, particularly those providing palliative care. They may help to perform other radiotherapy treatments in accordance with the NHS Trust’s protocols.

Screening Mammography

Assistant Practitioners in screening mammography perform basic mammographic examinations within the asymptomatic breast screening programme. Working on the mobile screening vans, they assist radiographers in providing and maintaining an efficient breast screening service.

The programmes have been approved by The Society and College of Radiographers.

Entry Qualifications

To enter the programme a student must:

• Be employed and have a training position in a Radiology Imaging department, or Breast Screening department or Radiotherapy department.
• Have a minimum of 5 GCSEs including English Language or a suitable Access Course.

Applicants who have not followed a traditional or focused programme of study will be considered on individual merits.
