Medicine

General

UK- CAT- All applicants will be required to take the UK-CAT aptitude test before being considered.

A-level

21 units of study: AAB grades at A-level to include at least 2 science subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics or Statistics. At least one science subject must be Biology or Chemistry (grade A). Biology or Chemistry must be offered at AS level (grade B) if not offered as a full A-level. Critical thinking is not considered at A-level however consideration will be given at AS level.

AS

Two AS subjects may be accepted in lieu of a third A-level. Biology and Chemistry at grade B or above if not offered at A-level. General Studies is not acceptable.

GCSE

English Language or Welsh first language at a minimum of grade B, Dual award science AA or 3 separate sciences AAB.

IRL

Applicants offering the IRL will normally be considered for entry only to the Foundation year of the Medicine course. AAAABB grades in the relevant subjects which must include Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English. 'A' grades must be achieved in Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

IB

5 year course (A100): 36 points, two sciences (out of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and either Mathematics or Statistics) must be offered at Higher Level, one of which is Chemistry or Biology. A minimum of 18 points must be achieved in the Higher Level subjects including a 6 in Chemistry or Biology. Chemistry or Biology must be offered at Subsidiary Level if not at Higher Level. Physics must be offered at GCSE level if not at Higher or Subsidiary Level. 

6 year course (A104): 36 points. Not more than one subject may be from Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

EB

Applicants offering the European Baccalaureate can be admitted to the five- year Medicine course provided the appropriate science components are included. Obtain Diploma with an overall score of 7.7 (77%). Individual subject grades of 7.7 must be achieved in Chemistry, plus 7.5 in Biology or Physics.

BTEC

Applicants offering a science-based BTEC National Diploma will normally be considered for entry only to the Foundation year of the Medicine course. Applicants with a BTEC Higher National Diploma can be admitted to the five year Medicine course provided the appropriate science components are included. Merit grades and predominantly Distinctions in final year units are normally required, along with GCSE English/ Welsh First Language at grade B.

Vocational A-Level

Vocational A Levels are acceptable as part of the 21 units required. A 12-unit Vocational A Level is acceptable for entry to Foundation year Medicine if accompanied by an A-level which is not Chemistry, Biology or Physics.

Welsh Baccalaureate

Standard offers for the 5 year A100 programme will be conditional upon achievement of the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma (WBQ) with 390 Tariff points, including 15 units in optional qualifications (12 units from WBQ, plus 3 additional units). In addition to a pass in the Core, an A grade is required in GCE A level Chemistry or Biology and a in a second A-level science subject that may include Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Statistics. Biology and Chemistry must be offered at AS level with a minimum grade B, if not offered at  A-level. General Studies is not acceptable at AS or A level and only one Mathematics or Statistics subject may be included in meeting the conditions of the offer.

Scottish Higher

Applicants offering Scottish Highers will normally be considered for entry only to the Foundation year of the Medicine course.  AAAAB grades are required, including English Language, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

Key Skills

3 out of the 21 units required can be Key Skills at Level 3.

Interviewing Policy

No offers are made to applicants without interview. The interview session includes an introductory talk followed by a guided tour of the College with current medical students.

Other

Applicants with good grades at A-level (or equivalent) will be considered, as will those who have pursued appropriate science based Access courses and have achieved an overall grade of at least 70%. Graduates will have, or will be expected to achieve, at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree. Previous academic qualifications of graduate applicants will also be considered.
