Research is undertaken in all Schools of the University and the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) showed that world-leading research is being conducted in all disciplines. Of the 34 submitted research areas, Cardiff is in the top 5 in six disciplines including Civil and Construction Engineering; Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience; Communication, Cultural and Media Studies; Sociology; Allied Health; and Education; and in the top 10 in a further nine disciplines with a total of 87% of our research being classed as world-leading or internationally excellent, overall placing us fifth on rankings based on quality.
The University has also been awarded four Queen’s Anniversary Prizes, which recognises outstanding research in UK universities.
Such research expertise attracts considerable grants and investments - including funding from the Research Councils - leading academic staff from around the world, and draws the attention and recognition of the business community to the University. Over the last three years, Cardiff University was awarded on average £100m in research grants and contracts, including major investments from world known companies and corporations.
Cardiff University is proud to count two Nobel Laureates, Professor Sir Martin Evans FRS and Professor Robert Huber, among its world-renowned academic and research staff. We are equally proud to have Fellows of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the British Academy as well as Academicians of the Academy of Social Sciences at our University.
