Masters Excellence Scholarships

Postgraduate Taught Scholarships 2014-15

We are pleased to announce that the Taught Masters Excellence Scholarship Scheme for 2015/16 entry has been confirmed.

We are committed to invest up to a total of £500,000 in this high value competitive scholarship scheme to support Home and EU students who are planning to start an eligible master's programme in September 2015.

The Scholarships are each worth a minimum of £3,000 and will be awarded in the form of a tuition fee discount.

This scholarship package will give high-calibre students the opportunity to study at a world-leading, research-intensive university and help ease the associated financial burdens.

Scholarships will be awarded based on academic excellence.

We have two deadlines after which scholarship decisions will be made:
6 April and 5 August 2015.

‘Home’ and ‘EU’ students only (as classified for fee paying purposes, tuition fee status is determined after submitting an application to study) who are accepted on to an eligible postgraduate taught programme leading to a master's degree, and with a firm focus on academic excellence.

For applicants from countries outside the European Union, we also offer a range of highly prestigious international scholarships.

Applicants should normally have a first class or upper second classification undergraduate degree from a UK University, or an equivalent award from a recognised higher education institution elsewhere.

Eligible programmes

Eligible programmes include taught full-time and part-time taught programmes leading to a master's. Not included are our distance learning programmes and taught programmes leading to a postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma, MPhil and MRes. For the Pathway to PhD scheme in the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, only selected programmes are included in scholarship scheme, see below for the list of programmes, with the links for the other two Colleges directing you to our course finder list of postgraduate taught programmes for the respective academic School.

* The Pathway to PhD scholarships (available only in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) are for applicants applying for a master’s degree with the intention of going on to study at PhD level. The application will ask you to consider your research area and future sources of funding. It is recognised, however, that in making this application there is not a commitment to undertake further study, or to undertake further studies at Cardiff University. Similarly, in making an award, Cardiff University is not committing to making an offer for further study or for a further award.

For full-time masters' the Scholarships are each worth a minimum of £3,000, with Scholarships awarded by the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering worth £3,780. For part-time masters the scholarship is available over the duration of their programme. The Scholarship will be awarded in the form of a tuition fee discount and students who are successful in gaining a scholarship will have this amount deducted from their tuition fees.

The Taught Masters Excellence Scholarships are available for a maximum of one academic year.

The Masters Excellence Scholarship application form is available on the SIMS Online Applicant Portal to all Home and EU students who have applied to an eligible postgraduate taught programme leading to a masters' degree.

The application form will remain on the Online Applicant Portal until the second scholarship application deadline of Wednesday 5th August 2015, 23.59.

We have two application deadlines after which decisions will be made:

  • Monday, 6th April 2015 23.59
  • Wednesday, 5th August 2015 23.59 (subject to funding)

Please note: the University reserves the right to close applications at any time.

In addition, to be considered for a scholarship, applicants must also ensure the University has received their application to study for an eligible full-time postgraduate taught programme leading to a master’s degree at Cardiff University by the respective date, including references and transcripts.

There are numerous alternative sources and means to fund your postgraduate degree, including bursaries from charities and trusts, professional and career development loans and part-time employment. We also recommend the Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding.
