Why Choose Cardiff?

Main Building at night

The following are a few of the reasons why so many postgraduate students each year make Cardiff their university of choice:

A World-Leading University

Following the merging of activities with the University of Wales College of Medicine (UWCM) Cardiff University has the capacity and capability of a truly international university. Merger has been supported by a multi-million pound investment programme and will directly benefit students by increasing teaching, learning, research and support capabilities, as well as providing substantial academic, economic and healthcare benefits to society.

Outstanding Research

Cardiff University's outstanding record of achievement in research is complemented by the research strength of the former University of Wales College of Medicine. The University is a member of the prestigious Russell Group, which is formed by the country's top 20 research universities. These research strengths ensure that Cardiff University continues to be recognised and respected world-wide.

A Dynamic Learning Community

Learning takes place in a stimulating research environment in which students benefit from interaction with enthusiastic researchers who are working at the frontiers of knowledge in their disciplines. Beyond graduation, there are opportunities for lifelong learning and continuing professional development.

An International Reputation

Cardiff University is internationally respected for its diverse range of taught courses and cutting-edge research. This international reputation is further reflected through the profile of our academic staff and cosmopolitan student body, with some 2,700 students drawn to Cardiff from more than 100 countries.

The Graduate Centre

Cardiff University is one of the few universities in Britain that has a dedicated facility for its postgraduate students. The Graduate Centre acts as an additional academic and social focus for postgraduate students, and a centre for the broader postgraduate community.

Bright Prospects

Our postgraduates of all disciplines are in demand across a range of careers. Employers interested in recruiting recent postgraduates target the University, and in 2009 over 90% of Cardiff's postgraduates of known destination went into employment or further postgraduate study.

Modern Facilities

In excess of £160 million has been invested in recent years to provide students with modern and well equipped facilities, creating a first-class environment in which to live and study.

Location, Location, Location

The merged University has two campuses: the Cathays Park campus and the Heath Park campus. The former is located in Cardiff's magnificent civic centre, where academic buildings, student residences, the Graduate Centre, the Students' Union and the city centre are all within a short walk of each other. The latter is located a short distance away at Heath Park, which is home to the University Hospital of Wales.

Accessibility

Excellent road and rail links mean that both London and Birmingham are just 2 hours away, and the Central Station, coach and bus services are all centrally placed. For EU and International students, Cardiff International Airport serves many major destinations.

Capital City Advantages

One of Britain's six 'cities of elegance', Cardiff has recently been hailed as the most desirable city in the UK in which to live and work. It combines the practical advantages of a small, friendly, inexpensive city with the cultural and recreational amenities of a successful and modern capital.

A Vibrant Cultural and Social Scene

The city of Cardiff offers excellent opportunities for cultural, social and sporting activities, from contemporary film to dance and drama to major concerts to high-profile sporting events.  Cardiff offers a relaxed multi-cultural environment where all nationalities and beliefs are represented and respected.
