Taught Courses

Students at a taught postgraduate course

A wide range of taught postgraduate courses are offered by most Schools within Cardiff University, including Master's courses (e.g. MA, MSc, LLM, MScEcon), Diploma and some Certificate courses. Taught postgraduate study can benefit you in a variety of ways. It can provide the opportunity to continue and deepen knowledge gained at undergraduate level; provide a new academic or career direction by converting to a different subject area; act as the next stepping-stone towards fully independent academic research; and confer a significant advantage in a competitive job market. Above all, it will be a challenging, stimulating and exciting experience.

Taught Master’s schemes involve a period of study — which combines instruction through lectures, seminars, tutorials, directed reading and practical work — followed by the preparation and submission of an independently researched dissertation. Diploma and Certificate courses offer a similarly comprehensive range of study options, without the dissertation component.

Full-time study will usually last one year (or nine months for Diploma and Certificate courses). However, many courses offer the possibility of part-time study, which provides the same opportunities spread over two years (or 21 months). This is ideal if you are unsure whether you want to give up other commitments and want to fit your studies around work and/or family life.
