Postgraduate House Hunting Event

If you are new to a city, we realise that finding somewhere suitable to live is a top priority. Our House Hunting Event is a three-day event intended to assist you in your hunt for accommodation that you're happy with. It will also enable you to get to know a number of like-minded people with whom you could look for shared accommodation, as well as offering an opportunity to sample your first taste of Cardiff's social life.

The Postgraduate House Hunting Event is for all new and current Cardiff University postgraduate students who will be looking for shared rented accommodation in the next academic year.

This year's House Hunting Event takes place from Wednesday 15th to Friday 17th August.

About the Event:

The House Hunting Event is organised by the Postgraduate Recruitment Office in conjunction with the Graduate Centre.

This year's schedule of the event is still being finalised. To give you an idea we have included the schedule of last year's event.

House Hunting Event 2011: Outline
An introductory talk at the Postgraduate House Hunting Event
One of several introductory talks held at the start of our annual Postgraduate House Hunting Event

Starting at 2pm on the Wednesday in the Graduate Centre are orientation sessions run by staff and students from Cardiff University and the Students' Union. These  provide advice and information on:

  • tenancy agreements
  • finding accommodation to rent
  • a guide to different areas of Cardiff

Later, there are ice-breakers to help you get to know a number of people with whom you could look for shared accommodation. You then have some time to check out properties which are available to rent, and to organise viewings of properties either on your own or in a group.  Dinner is provided on this evening, followed by an organised social event. After this, many participants walk into town to sample Cardiff’s nightlife!

On the Thursday, the day starts with a second 'Getting Acquainted' opportunity for those yet to find people with whom to share accommodation. Throughout the day, you are free to track down a flat/house/bed-sit, though help and advice is on hand should you need it. You will have access to telephones to arrange property viewings throughout the event and  can also check out group tenancy agreements with staff in the Advisory Centre (Students' Union). In the evening, there are semi-organised forays into the city for food and liquid refreshment.

Friday starts with a 'Household Reshuffle' opportunity for those whose choice of accommodation requires a change in the number of housemates in their group (i.e. if more or less rooms are available than originally anticipated). Alternatively you can either have a well-earned lie-in (if your house hunting has already been successful) or spend more time viewing potential properties. If you think you may need more time, you can include an extra night's accommodation in your booking and stay  until the Saturday.

How much will it cost, what is available?

The cost of the event is kept to a minimum to make sure that your hard-earned cash isn't wasted. Booking options as follows:

  • Standard 2-night accommodation option [Cost: TBC] - Single en suite bedroom in student residences on the nights of Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th August, with Evening Reception and Meal on the evening of Wednesday 15th August 2012
  • Extended 3-night accommodation option [Cost: TBC] - Single en suite bedroom in student residences on the nights of Wednesday 15th, Thursday 16th and Friday 17th August, with Evening Reception and Meal on the evening of Wednesday 15th August 2012
  • Reception-only option (no accommodation) [Cost: TBC] - Please note that no overnight accommodation is included in this option; Full event participation, Evening Reception and Meal on the evening of Wednesday 15th August 2012 are included.

Note to prospective PGCE (Further Education) students and students seeking short-term lets:

Please remember that teaching placements for PGCE students are in and around Cardiff and, for some students, it may be better to locate outside Cardiff for Part 2 of the course (January until the end of May). It therefore may not be advisable for you to enter into a long-term contract with a landlord in August.

This event is not aimed at students who are seeking short-term lets. Students seeking short-term lets are welcome to attend but you should note that these are usually not released by landlords until end August/beginning of Sept. The Student Advisory service maintains a list of private accommodation which is available to rent and which includes those available for short-term let. For further information about short-term letting in Cardiff please contact Student Advisory (advice@cardiff.ac.uk or 029 2078 1410).

Continuing Students

The House Hunting Event is open to current postgraduate students who are looking for shared rented accommodation for the remaining years of postgraduate study at Cardiff University.

As current students it is assumed that you will not require accommodation in halls of residence for the event.  Therefore, we are able to offer the event at the reduced, reception-only rate, which includes invitation to the orientation and ice-breaker sessions on the Wednesday, where new postgraduate students and potential housemates can meet. A buffet dinner will be provided.

When completing a booking form, simply write ‘Current Student’ at the top of the form.

Please note: if you wish to book a place for the House Hunting Event, you should return a completed booking form to us by early August.  Please also note that, for this booking option, we will be unable to offer a refund in the event of you canceling your attendance at the event.
