Completing and Submitting Your Application

There are two ways in which you can apply for a postgraduate programme at Cardiff University, online and as a paper based application.

Please click on the links below to learn more:

Apply Online

You can now apply for most postgraduate programmes at Cardiff University online. Using our Online Application Service is the recommended method for applying to most postgraduate programmes at Cardiff University.

Note: for a small number of programmes, such as those undergoing final approval by Cardiff University, applicants must use the paper-based application.

Applicants are advised to locate the postgraduate programme for which they wish to apply (using our Course Finder database, if required) prior to commencing their application.

To access our Online Application Service, please click the 'Apply Online' button opposite, or click here.

It is also possible to submit a paper-based application for a postgraduate programme at Cardiff if you prefer.

However, please note that applicants who choose to submit a paper-based application cannot currently benefit from the features provided by the Online Application Service as outlined above.

Unless you specifically wish to submit a paper-based application form or are applying for a programme where paper-based applications are required, we would advise you to use the Online Application Service.

Copies of our printed application form can be obtained as follows:

  • Download: Electronic copies of our Postgraduate application material are available to download from this web page, together with the guidance notes for completing the form. Please see the resources section opposite (both English and Welsh language versions are available to download).
  • By post: A limited number of printed postgraduate application forms are available by post. To obtain a printed copy of the Postgraduate Application Form, please complete our Prospectus Request Form; or send an email to Prospectus@cardiff.ac.uk. Please remember to state that you are interested in postgraduate courses.

Submitting a paper-based application

To submit a paper-based application for postgraduate study, you will need to send in the following items:

  • Postgraduate Application form and Equality Monitoring Form (combined file) — completed, signed and dated
  • Two completed referee report forms/reference letters (please also supply contact details for these two referees in the space provided on the application form); it will significantly speed up the application process if you enclose your references with your application.
  • Copies of relevant qualification certificates/transcripts (e.g. degree certificate, transcripts, TOEFL/IELTS test results as appropriate) and a photocopy of any letter(s) indicating that the applicant has secured financial support for his/her studies (typically from overseas governments or universities, or from industrial/commercial organisations)
  • Research Proposal (research students only) - this should be approximately 500 words in length and is only required for research (MPhil/PhD) applications.

All questions on the form should be answered legibly. If you are unsure of how to answer a question please read the Guidance Notes.
