Campus life

Sport Hockey 500x280

Study abroad students are based at the Cathays Park campus in the magnificent civic centre of Cardiff.

Outside your studies you will find a full range of social and sporting activities on campus, providing the opportunity to learn something new and meet people

The Students' Union and student societies

Student social life revolves around the Students’ Union Building, a centrally located complex which includes its own nightclub, restaurants, shops, bars, music video and an advice centre.

Being a member of the Union also entitles you to discounts in many city centre shops and gives you the opportunity to join one of over a 120 student societies. There is a society for just about every social, cultural and sporting interest, including a Debating Society, Sci-Fi Society and Harry Potter Society!

A full list of societies and more about the Union's activities can be found on the Students’ Union website.

Sports and keeping fit

Cardiff offers the widest range of sporting facilities within the British Universities’ Sports Association. The Athletic Union in the Students' Union runs more than 60 sports clubs and produces its own magazine. Read more about the Athletic Union on the Students' Union website.

Almost every popular sport is played at the University, and even if you don’t play sport, you can keep fit in one of the University’s modern gyms or by attending a fitness class. There is a gym at the very centre of campus.

For swimming, Maindy Pool is close to the University campus and several student residences.

More about sports facilities can be found on the Sport website.

Many students choose to use their spare time to give back and Student Volunteering Cardiff is one of the UK’s largest student volunteering organisations with more than 1,000 members.

Examples of recent campaigns have included nature conservation, antibullying and assisting teenagers with homework. The latter of which has recently won acclaim from the Deputy Prime Minister.

For further information see the Student Volunteering Cardiff website.

If you are interested in volunteering you should consult with the Study Abroad Office before you arrive as it may affect which visa you apply for.

One of the largest social and sporting events at Cardiff University is Varsity. During Varsity, Cardiff and Swansea universities meet in 20 sporting events to compete for the Varsity Shield.
