Cardiff University Pension Scheme (CUPF)

Joining CUPF

There are two sections of the Cardiff University Pension Fund, the Final Salary section and a Career Average Revalued Earnings section.

The Career Revalued Earnings section (CARE) is open to all new employees from 1 January 2012 and the Final Salary section is now closed to new members, meaning employees who joined prior to 31 December 2011 remain in this section.

CUPF (CARE) membership is available to new employees on grades 1-4.

You will automatically be deemed a member of Cardiff University Pension Fund from commencement of your employment.

Should you wish to opt out of the Cardiff University Pension Fund (CUPF) you need to complete the “ Notice to Opt Out of Pensions Saving ” form.

If you are a CUPF Final Salary section member and subsequently have a new post in the university which makes you eligible for USS membership then you will be eligible to join the USS Final Salary section until September 2014, after this date you would only be eligible to join the USS Career Revauled Benefits section (CRB).
Please check with the pensions section at Cardiff University if you are unsure of your eligibility to join USS.


Transfers into CUPF

Currently Cardiff University Pension Fund is only accepting transfers into the scheme from Public Sector schemes, these being, Civil Service Pension Scheme, Local Government, Teacher’s and NHS.  All members who were in the scheme prior to 31 May 2012 have until 1 June 2014 to transfer benefits from a Public Sector scheme.   For all new joiners from 1 June 2012 will have two years from the date of joining to transfer benefits from a Public Sector scheme.  Please contact Mrs Rebecca Douirani in the pensions section on (029) 2087 9162 for the relevant transfer request form.


AVC’s (Additional Voluntary Contributions)

No longer available for CUPF or CUPF (CARE) section.  


Nomination forms

Please keep the pensions section updated with your beneficiary details by completing the nomination forms, expression of wish and/or registration of potential dependant.
Both these forms are available from Miss Sian Thomas in the pensions section on (029) 2087 9175.

Keeping you updated

From time to time you will receive pension information either by the internal/ external mail or by email where we do our utmost to keep you up to date with any relevant important information about the scheme.  You will also be invited to the annual “open meeting” where the Board of Trustees and their advisers are available to answer any questions you may have relating the fund.  The meeting is usually 30 minutes in duration and we try and encourage as many members to attend.
